Is it reasonable to think one could find a farely nice studio apartment near downtown for $700-$900 a month?

With no problem. Some of the nicer high rises in Gold Coast with a lot of really nice amenities (doorman, pool, etc.) may cost a little bit more than that, but for just a studio, you should find a ton in that price range.

Depends on your definition of "near downtown." If you mean within a 15 to 20-minute commute... sure; you can probably even go as low as $600.
