I give them a pass as they're old, and I have a garage so it doesn't actually impact me. Where I draw the line is the space right in front of my house- and that's simply due to the fact I'm not looking at someone's trash all winter. You leave it outside my house, it's going in the alley - and in broad daylight so everyone can see me doing it.

I think its stupid but frankly, I've got a garage I park in under my loft so its not that big of a deal to me. I don't see it as much in WL then I did when I was living in Wicker Park or even in Lincoln Park.

I think this so-called tradition needs to end. I may start to "retaliate" against people I see leaving stuff in parking spaces. Two can play at that game.

Years ago when my sister lived in Wrigleyville she didn't drive during the winter to make sure she had a parking spot.
"hey, come on and visit us for the weeknd!"
"Only if you pick me up at the bus/train station..."

Yeah, we already have a thread on this.

Dibbing in Bridgeport happens anyhow, even without snow. I've also seen the same cars parked in the same spots for 3 months now. I don't even know if they ever leave.

And yeah, I'm reluctant to move cones that say 'streets and san' or 'CPD'. I'll park a few houses further.

I think this is pretty silly. Just because you dig out a spot doesn't mean you're entitled to anything. If everyone followed this logic, there'd never be anywhere to park. A couple years ago, I was sharing a house with 4 other guys. We got the idea to make parking as easy as possible so we would dig out spaces whenever we could. If there were 2 spots next to each other, we'd get two of us together and dig out both spots. Within a few days we'd have all the available spots near our house dug out. It was pretty sweet. I think if anyone would have put a chair in one of those spots, I'd have just stolen their chair.

Last year I spent an hour digging myself out of a spot after not moving for a few weeks. Forgot my wallet at home turned back around and there was a chair in the spot I just dug out of! Some scumbag called dibs on the spot I just dug out of. I would make a point to park in places that have 'dibs' on them but Im sure someone would key my car or bash in my window

I don't have a car, so I've never done this, but I do support the practice in some situations. My elderly parents dig their spots out, which is a risk to their health, so I have no problem with them, or others like them, claiming a spot. If there's a major storm, like the one we just had, I'm fine with people who actually do the work of digging out a spot claiming it for themselves, as long as the snow is still bad on the street. Once its starts to melt, then get the trash off of the streets. I do think it's ridiculous when people claim spots in light snow storms, or when they haven't done the work. Right now, a block away from me, someone has two sawhorses out in the street. Not only did they not dig the spaces out, they're not even dug out at all. Still completely full of snow, and not making the plows' job any easier.

I've actually only seen this in person a small handful of times in the past 9 years.

I could only understand it if we get something like 8+ inches of snow - which (at least in the past 5 years i can remember) hasn't happended but a few times on the north side.

I lived in Lakeview and now Uptown, and I've never seen it up here. Does it happen more in certain neighborhoods? I think I probably end up walking on the more main roads anyway since I'm usually coming/going from a bus or train. I'm assuming it's probably more on small residential streets.

Where is it most common?
