Yep. It's a suburb but not a south suburb. It's a suburb in Indiana.

It's not like there's some magic that happens when you cross the state line that makes the Indiana suburbs any different than the Illinois suburbs they border.

Suburb in Indiana or not it is still a suburb of Chicago. It is closer to the city than where you live.

Hammond is a suburb of Chicago in Indiana, yes. Hammond is not a south suburb though. It's Indiana.

One of the benefits of living in a south suburb east of I-57 is close proximity to Northwest Indiana.

It is South of the city. Slightly Southeast if you want to be technical. So how is it not a South suburb?

Except -- they don't pay Illinois real estate taxes.

Well, I'd just like to point out that when crossing the state line into Dyer, Indiana, you immediately notice how less run down it is..

Because that's simply not the term that is used. You can call Northwest Indiana the "southeast suburbs" till your hearts content but people will still get confused. They'll think you're talking about the south suburbs in Illinois that are east of I-57. Northwest Indiana residents don't call themselves south suburbanites so why should you?

They consider themselves suburbanites, which they are.

People in Northwest Indiana do not consider themselves a part of the South Suburbs. They consider themselves part of Northwest Indiana. And yes, as I've already said, this is a suburban region in Chicagoland. The South Suburbs are a different suburban region in Chicagoland.

My original post was a response to someone who called Hammond a "south suburb". I said no, it's in Indiana. What's the problem? What are you even arguing with?
