Does anyone know about living in east Chicago, near the water. We're moving from NC. Thanks for your help!

A little more information is necessary. East Chicago is a steel town in Indiana. The East Side of Chicago is a blue collar neighborhood on Chicago's south side. However, 'east in Chicago near the lake' is downtown east of Michigan Avenue and south of the river. Which one were you referring to?

We were talking about downtown Chicago, east of Michigan Ave. How are the apartments around that area? Crime? etc. Thanks

Default Lakeshore East

I believe you are talking about what is termed Lakeshore East. Do some research on this area by searching that name.

Lakeshore East has some expensive rental apartments but is mostly condos. This is where Sammy Sosa lived. Parking is great if you have a dedicated space and otherwise impossible. Its very convenient for folks who work downtown but can be crowded if there is a festival or airshow going on. There's good access to the lake, Grant Park, Navy Pier and the museum campus. Crime is not a real issue there.
