Yes I just saw it in the south town star. He's been in the Hazel Crest-Markham-Harvey area too.

Even this woman acknowledges the truth:

"And there's Betancourt, who remembers how hard her father worked in an array of blue-collar jobs to support his family, but she nonetheless believes that Latino immigrants in her Northwest Side neighborhood are the cause of local crime."

""It's not the safe neighborhood it used to be," she said.""

Tribune/WGN Immigration poll: Most Chicagoans don't want police to hunt illegal immigrants, Tribune/WGN poll finds - chicagotribune.com

Btw-as far as the accuracy of the poll in this story-it is very questionable.

"The telephone poll of 800 heads of households across the six-county Chicago region July 8-14 found that 57 percent of the respondents did not want police to seek illegal immigrants for deportation."

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/l...,3355133.story

A sample of 800 out of at least 8,000,000 people? Very suspect.

FWIW, I've lived in Hermosa, which is pretty heavily Latino, for the past 5 years. Yeah there may be some crime but almost none of it is random...stupid crap like family disputes or love triangles or whatever. The properties are for the most part well maintained, most of my neighbors take a lot of pride in the area and helping out fellow neighbors if need be, and there are restaurants that blow away the "Mexican" places you'll find in yuppie neighborhoods. I don't see the demographic trend in Portage Park as a negative...it's just a shame that working class whites are so quick to leave when a minority group starts moving in to their neighborhood.
