I'm doing research as I'm looking to move to Chicago (because of a job) within the next couple months or so and I've been looking at the Lakeview area.

But, I'm completely and utterly blind when it comes the good areas in Chicago as I've only visited once (about 15 years ago).

My budget for rent would be upwards of $5k/mo (but just because I can spend that doesn't mean I want to!) so I'm sure I can find a pretty decent place with that kind of budget... Dog friendly (parks?), and close to transportation because I'll be selling both of my vehicles.

What are the "nicer" areas in Chicago that would cater to a mid 20's single male? I'm not big on partying, but do drink socially. I'm more of an intellect, and would prefer to be around people who aren't fascinated by Brad and Angelina's latest adoption...

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Lakeview is the most densely populated residential area. It has a lot of taller apartment buildings, and it's definitely an upper scale neighborhood. Just south of Lakeview is an even more upscale but less densely populated neighborhood, Lincoln Park. It's a little more expensive but you can definitely find something nice under 5,000 k there. If you want artsier but still upper scale neighborhoods, check out Wicker Park or Bucktown. Really, anything on the northside will be generally safe though. Everything there is rapidly gentrifying and there aren't really any genuinely "bad" neighborhoods there.

As we were going to open houses over the weekend I saw a few modest SFHs in prime Lakeview that were around 3500ish to rent. At 5k there is little you can't afford in the neighborhood, but you might find the supply a bit limited.

If you like Lakeview, I'd stay with the north side. Lakeview, Lincoln Park, the Gold Coast are all great neighborhoods. They all have this really nice neighborhoody feel, kid/dog friendly, yuppie shops, etc.
