Mainly for young People? You're in your 40's? Since when is 40 something not young?

Do you look and feel old? Because it's only a number. Age is not an indicator as to how long someone will live. People die when they are 16 y/o. It's only a number. What matters are the number of QUALITY years that you have.

If you desire to move to Chicago........do it before you do get to old(87y/o) and will not be able nor even have the energy to enjoy the city.

My plan is to move to NYC by the end of this year or buy March of 2011.

I'm not in my 40's but I'll be 37 in March 2011. I would not care if I was 47, I'd still move there because NYC is the only place that I have ever wanted to live.

I never wanted to live in Chicago. I was offered a great position that I could not pass up. I was downsized 2 years ago and I have no need to be here anymore.

Good luck on your move( if you choose to accept this mission)

I was in Chicago for a couple of years in my 20s and absolutely loved it. It did seem like everywhere I went there were tons of young people just like me. I have been contemplating (not planning yet) on the possibility of moving back to Chicago but am wondering if I'm basing it too much on my memory of the place as a 20-something year old.

I've lived in and visited a lot of major cities around the world and have to say Chicago is the #1 American city in my book in terms of overall enjoyability, with only London and Munich as global contenders. But as a young person I did go out a lot and enjoyed the nightlife back then; fastforward 20 yrs, now I'm quiet, do not party, and keep to myself mostly.

I haven't been back for these 20 yrs and so need to know from you Chicagoans....is it really mostly geared for young folks? How do older singles feel about their life there?

Btw, I live in Hawaii and I get a lot of flack for thinking about leaving paradise and moving to a cold place. I'm not thrilled with being frozen but just miss city life in Chicago -- the jazz, the bldgs, the dining, museums....stuff that isn't found here and isn't missed by those who have never experienced it.

Look forward to your answers.

(p.s. A former co-worker did move back to Chicago after spending a decade here...and is soooo much happier for it.)

I think you'll be fine... I was 27-28 there... when my roommate was 39/40... we went out all the time... There is plenty to do for somebody that is 40... don't sweat it man. I actually preferred the older crowd we sometimes went to or he would get me into....

I can't get over the fact you haven't lived here in 20 years! It's a much much different place than it was in 1990.

If you're internally at peace, have a good sense of self, and are basically a happy person, you'll be all those things whether in Chicago or Timbuktu. However, a gut check is in order. Ask yourself if you're running to Chicago, or away from your current situation.

All ages and subcultures have a place here. It can sometimes be a combustable mix, but if the sophisticated urban lifestyle is what you seek, Chicago offers among the world's best big city amenitites anywhere.

I agree that a lot of web boards skew to the younger, extremely "blue brained" set. Sometimes I feel like the neighborhood old fart screaming for the kids to get off my lawn, but as mentioned upthread, that's the nature of the net. When it gets tiresome, I scroll past and turn off. Life's way too short to get patootzed over a freaking message board.

Good luck to you.

Thanks for the tip. Keep those recommendations coming. I'm always wondering where the single women my age are hiding at.
