You'll get trendy pretty much by default since you want close commute, relative safety, and some semblance of a social life. I think Logan Square might be your place, somewhere close to the Logan/Kedzie/Milwaukee intersection. It's trendy but in a low-key way, it's 20 minutes from downtown, and it's relatively cheap if you shop around (decent 1-bedroom starting around $850).

I might agree, but he said "not crime ridden".

For some reason there's a huge disconnect between property values and rental rates in this town. It's possible to spend up to 3 grand a month on a one-bedroom, but that's with every amenity possible such a pool, exercise room, doorman, etc. In general, it's a lot easier to rent than to buy around here.

What's the commute like from the Kedzie/Milwaukee intersection? Would you recommend the CTA or a car? Or bus? The blue line looks pretty convenient.

Once the train arrives, it's about 15 to 20 minutes to downtown. Average wait for a train during rush hour is about 5 minutes. I wouldn't recommend driving unless you have $250/mo to spend on parking downtown or have 30 grand to drop on a deeded parking spot.

A couple of people made some statements in another thread about needing anywhere between $200,000-$300,000 to be comfortable with a family of four or five in a high-end neighborhood, but there were a whole lot of conditions attached to those statements.

"The people on this board'? Do you really think you are operating as some sort of enlightened free agent while everyone else subscribes to the hive mind? Don't answer that. We know the answer. We are watching.
