Thank you, everyone! I'm cutting Roscoe Village out of my list, which is now:

Lincoln Square, North Center, Ravenswood, Lakeview (east and west, southport corridor)
Lincoln Park, Gold Coast, Old Town

(Stations: Addison brown, Irving Park, Western, Paulina, Southport)

Does that sound about right? Anything I'm missing?

I've noticed that the nice grain of the Broadway shopping district really falls appart as you get north of Ann Sather's. Or perhaps around Stratford. I blame this on Alderman Helen Shiller, since the 46th Ward starts somewhere around there. Along with cloudy days, global warming, and continental drift.

She's the reason for all these earthquakes?

For your price point, I would rule out Gold Coast (and possibly Lincoln Park). GC doesn't feel very east coast to me, anyway.

GC is arguably the most east coast part of the city with its brownstone townhouses and Italianette architecture.

^ True with the houses. For some reason, I always equate GC with high rises.

In this market, don't rule out anything (except the real idiotic stuff.... "I'm looking for three bedrooms in the safest part of the city for $550 a month....")

I'm seeing condos for sale right now in the Gold Coast for prices that 3 or 4 years ago would've given everyone a heart-attack and had 1000 people lined up with suitcases of cash, ready to buy that instant... (short sales, mostly) Now? Tumbleweeds...

Rentals aren't much different.

I agree, the area around the Paulina stop is really cool with local shops and boutique and independent restaurants. Rents are more affordable here than in other parts of Lakeview. Once you get north of the Irving Park stop things start to get more boring. Although the shopping district near the Western stop is pretty cool.
