100 murders is nothing for Chicago at this point. Anyone from a northern ghetto knows the real killing doesn't start until it gets warm outside.

Sorry, but per the room sticky, city-specific topics belong in the designated room for that city/state, not in the general u.s. room. Moving to the appropriate room.

Chicago has had 100 homicides by this point every year for the past 5 decades, but although the city has big issues with crime - it's actually been going down for almost 20 years now.

Chicago's murder rate is around middle of the pack as far as large cities. It's roughly similar to Houston, Phoenix, Dallas, etc since it hit its historic lows the past 5 years.

At least it's going in the right direction.

Violent Crimes:

1991: 90,522 Up from year before
1992: 84,261 down 7%
1994: 78,352 down 7%
1996: 67,498 down 14%
1998: 62,947 down 7%
1999: 50,524 down 20%
2000: 48,273 down 5%
2001: 46,685 down 3%
2002: 45,961 down 2%
2003: 39,575 down 14%
2004: 36,786 down 7%
2005: 36,207 down 2%
2006: 35,290 down 3%
2007: 35,021 down 1%
2008: 35,764 up 2%
2009: 33,486 down 6%

2010 through March; down 13% from same period in 2009.

Murder rate:

1992 rate: 33.9/100,000
2009 rate: 15.5/100,000

Violent Crime rate:

1992 rate: 3,251/100,000
2009 rate: 1,155/100,000

Like many places it's mostly in certain areas of town. The west and south sides for the most part.

If you look at district stats and populations in those districts, for the past 5 years around 75% of violent crime happens in areas with 25% of the city's population. Around 75% of the population lives in areas with 25% of the violent crime. The "safest" areas of the city are generally the most densely populated north side, and the northwest sides of the city.

It's very segregated as well.

City population:

Black: 35%
White: 32%
Hispanic: 28%
Asian: 5%

Murders:

Black: 77%
Hispanic: 20%
White/Asian: 3%

The police chief stated recently that this year, a large majority of the violent crime has happened in only 9% of the cities streets.

That's kinda why more isn't done, it's pretty sad. A majority of the killings are gang related, and are young black males. People just "let them go at it".

Now tell us about all the crime that goes unreported due to Chicago's shady reporting practices. You have not heard of this I'm guessing??????????????????????????????????????

Actually Chicago has about 126 murders not 100, but yea.....some of the bad neighborhoods on Chicagos northside have been quiet like Humboldt Park and logan Square. Even pilsen.

It's kinda hard not report a murder unless they're homeless don't you think

Compared to the 1990's? I'd be willing to bet a lot more was unreported and not counted compared to today. So I suppose actual crime has gone down more than is officially stated.

Since the first thread you posted on this topic was removed and you saw fit to post it a second time, I guess I'll just say this again:

Who knows tonygeorgia, maybe some day Atlanta's violent crime rate will be as low as Chicago's. Mind your own back yard before minding someone else's.

isn't the OP supposedly in the military? OP needs to man up and stop whining about crime here b/c Chicago at its absolute worst is nothing compared to the active war zones in the ME

HOW DO YOU REDUCE CRIME IN CHICAGO. SIMPLE RECLASSIFY IT... A DEAD BODY THAT HAS A BULLET HOLE IN IT IS NOW A "DEATH INVESTIGATION". SOMEBODY TRYS TO BREAK INTO YOUR HOME,THAT WAS ATTEMTED BURGLARY NOW ITS CALLED "CRIMINAL DAMAGE TO PROPERTY".SOME ONE STEALS YOUR PURSE THATS NOW CALLED "THEFT FROM BUILDING".

Chicagoans need to keep in mind how corrupt their city government truly is and has proven to be over the decades. There are reasons that the FBI will not accept Chicago crime stats. They are often incomplete or inaccurate. That said, Chicago has a problem with the amount of hot heads and gangbangers that it attracts. It had a reputation as a seedy place from the start. From the heavy youth violence on the south and west sides, to more recent examples of murders or attacks in places like uptown or bucktown. It's not rampant everywhere as some would have you believe, but the naysayers obviously do not follow the news closely or they are insulated in a nice suburb and pretend they are a city dweller and know it all.
