They are often incomplete or inaccurate. That said, Chicago has a problem with the amount of hot heads and gangbangers that it attracts. It had a reputation as a seedy place from the start. From the heavy youth violence on the south and west sides, to more recent examples of murders or attacks in places like uptown or bucktown. It's not rampant everywhere as some would have you believe, but the naysayers obviously do not follow the news closely or they are insulated in a nice suburb and pretend they are a city dweller and know it all.

Also,if your luggage gets stolen at O'Hare,it gets reported as lost. Lost property is not reported as a crime,further skewing the stats.
