Not afraid. Just describing some rather unusual characteristics of the area. They never bothered me at all. I'm much more concerned/afraid of the drug dealers and other shady types who I've seen east of Broadway (not all the time, but on occasion).

"East of Broadway" is the nicest part of the neighborhood until you get north of Montrose. The shady people tend to congregate ON Broadway, and also Sheridan to a lesser extent. Of course, there is that one block of Cuyler that is a problem (800 W)--and that is between Broadway and Clarendon. Maybe that's what you saw? It's really an anomaly in Buena Park. One slumlord owns a group of buildings there, and he is constantly in housing court.

Yeah, you gotta watch out for those wheelchair types... they can be a shifty bunch.

I actually went to check the place out with my friend. The corner of Sheridan and Wilson is shady. There were a lot of people just hanging around at the bus stops and what not. There were also a lot of school age children around (it was after 3 p.m.). The building she is looking into is actually very very nice. There are two locked doors before you get into the building and the back of the building is fenced in. There are cameras in several places. While waiting for her to get there, I was waiting outside of the building. I felt uncomfortable waiting there for half an hour in front of the buidling, but during that half an hour, I saw at least 5 cop cars drive by both going north and south on Sheridan. I thought about going to the McDonalds and just buying something so I can sit down and wait in there but I just stayed put until she got there. It isn't a place I would want to walk around after dark, but for the price of the rent and since it is a short term lease, it might be worth it.

Sheridan and Wilson is probably the worst location I can think of in Uptown. But it's markedly better if you go just a few blocks south to Montrose. And of course, Irving Park Road is the border with Lake View.

Just throwing this in there...

Currently looking for apartments and went down to wilson/sheridan stops and allover the area really towards the lake... I would say it is far too sketchy even for a large white male and certainly not somebody brand new to the city. Despite the more "yuppie" places moving in there is still too much drug dealer looking types (actually saw a drug deal go down) etc. I certainly wouldn't live around there unless I wanted to invest in the area. At looking at getting in there around 10-11pm in the evenings I went down there around that time and I would not feel comfortable walking off that stop every night or on the weekends coming from a bar even later. Even in the daytime there are certainly shady types hanging out. It actually seemed pretty sketchy until you got west of Clark.

Just my thoughts.

I'm currently near Montrose and Clarendon and I've always heard people say never to go west of Broadway...

Isn't west of Broadway along Montrose considered Ravenswood? I checked it out for the first time today and it was WAY more beautiful and yuppified than east of Broadway where I live now. I'm confused.
