I still remember the first time I drove through Chicago coming from Texas. I was mortified by what I saw driving up through. I had only seen that type of poverty in the movies. I haven't been to Englewood but from what I read I wouldn't say its safe.

You said west englewood is nice? I looked at an apartment off of 76th and Stewart. Is that considered regular englewood or west englewood? The buildings were great and I absolutely love the apartment. However, I will be a transplant with my daughter, so of course I want to be safe. At the same token, I do not believe living amongs black people means you won't be safe. Any thoughts or suggestions are greatly appreciated.
I also spoke with a lady that has an apartment in the 1200 block of W. 82nd street, does anyone have any thoughts on this area? Is that considered East Garfield Park?

I am an AA female and walked down the streets of Englewood on 3/25/09. I am still living with all of my body parts and not one person approached me whether in a questionable manner or not.
One thing I am finding is that Chicago has a lot of interracial segregation.
For Teacher Man, I am relocating from Delaware this week to Chicago, and beware of the people you talk to who live in Chicago. You will find that if you live on the Southside and it is not Hyde Park, then every other person on the southside is considered trash, because they are AA. Most people on here are giving great information, and telling you important things for you and your family's safety. However, I say, to also look at areas for yourself, as much as possible and take certain opinons at face value. What is sad is that the majority of this forum is white, yet it is the AA people degrading other AA people based on the side of town they live on.
It seems to be that if it isn't North, it isn't right.

1200 block of W. 82nd street is not in East Garfield Park. I believe it is in Chatham.

Avenger, I just checked city data for the information and it is considered to be Auburn Gresham.

Ahhh. I am glad you looked. For some reason my brain was fixated on 1200 East 82nd.
State Street is the dividing line between the Auburn Gresham and Chatham neighborhoods.
Therefore the 1200 block of West 82nd street is in Auburn Gresham.
Even great minds make mistakes.
