That's a little over-the-top. I've driven through there many times without incident. Though I'm very happy my car didn't break down!

Default South Side

Some good Southside options:

1.) Bridgeport (Close to White Sox stadium)
2.) Hyde Park (where U of Chicago is located)
3.) Back of the Yards

Englewood is probably the most violent area of Chicago, definitely stay away. Good luck!

Marquette Park is sinking fast. The further southwest the better but I'd try to avoid it in general.

I feel bad, every time I run across the name of this thread I almost laugh.

It's bad that Englewood is so rough that the statement "How safe is Englewood" almost means the same was "How prosperous is Gary"

Does anyone know anything about the elementary schools? As a teacher would I feel safe as a white female teaching in that area? Where would be the best place to live?

No, you would not feel safe at all. It's one of the most unsafe areas in the city, and I don't think you'd even feel safe walking to the faculty parking lot (assuming they have one).

If you take a job teaching in Englewood, I commend you. It won't be easy. But they do need some good teachers to be positive influences in their lives down there! There are a LOT of bad parents in that section of the city.

Where would you live? In a safe neighborhood far from Englewood. You are looking at a driving situation ayway. I would not recommend using the CTA to get to Englewood every day, and I'm a bit of an anti-car CTA enthusiast!

It's crazy, because even where I student teach in Joliet, the raucous minorities tend to eat the white female student teachers and teachers alive. I imagine the kids in Englewood are equally as rebellious.

I don't think you'll have an issue in the school itself, at least not at the elementary level. Even down there kids are used to having/seeing white teachers, so you won't be a novelty in the school itself. But the neighborhood is God-awful. One of the worst in the city. Lives up to every negative stereotype about the "inner city." It has improved little by little over the last decade but it's still a LONG way away from even being a "so-so" neighborhood.
