Skiing and mountain biking require a good drive to get to, so count those out of Chicago's repertoire, so to say.

Hrrm... I don't like hiking, camping, surfing, snowboarding, kayaking, fun in the sun, fishing, sun bathing, driving in a convertible, mountain biking, skateboarding. To me Chicago offers one of the quintessential examples in the world of urban life, and that is what I like it for, world class theater, restaurants, museums, nightlife, great public transit, car free lifestyle, diverse population, big music scene, world renowned universities, super sports town, amazing architecture, groups to get involved in, super pub and coffee house town, city parks you can walk a dog in, 4 seasons, reasonable COL, diverse economy, international visitors and consulates, awesome downtown and neighborhood events, etc. etc...it has 2 very convenient airports as well with lots of direct international flights to ..*other cities* so those are the things I like to do and Chicago has all of it. Yes New York is on another level, but Chicago holds its own. I wouldn't be going to the adirondacks anyway.

Another poster mentioned "Michelin guide"... yes Chicago does not have a Michelin guide for it, but it certainly has many Michelin star restaurants... The #1 rated restaurant in North America by Restaurant Magazine is in Chicago...

Chicago offers the quintessential cosmopolitan urban experience. What it doesn't offer is nice weather and lots of outdoor activities.

Agreed, except for the weather part. It offers plenty of nice weather, just not year around.
