Not mockery...logic.
Really, prison is full of people who have murdered others, even their own children because "God" told them to do it.....supposedly he did that alot back in the old days, yet now people choose to think people are crazy when they say God talked to them?

Logic, tool of great power when applied by thinking human beings. Of course, the religious avoid it at all costs.

Yep...to them virgin birth and resurrection are a given but if some bird on the street is trying to promote a story about being picked up by space aliens, he is a crazy fool.

Yes, it is making fun of the question but since god has never seen fit to explain to you why the Garden or Adam and Eve were created why would one expect to be able to answer why he put the tree there.

Good stuff everyone. Thanks for the laughs!

I'm actually a little surprised that only a couple of people tried to answer. Perhaps nobody has offered a reasonable explanation because there is none...

The tree of knowledge becomes a tree of life, after you've been engaged with it for a lifetime. If you plow with his heifer long enough, you get the riddle.

Behold, the man is become as one of us knowing good and evil. Would not the father want his son to "become as one of us"??? (Adam is the Son of God, Luke 3:38, as was "Eve", "and he called THEIR NAME "Adam", Gen 5:2.) However can the heir grow up and take over the family business? Except a seed fall to the ground and die, it bears no fruit. We must needs die. But - oh death where is thy sting.

The heir as a child differeth nothing from a servant. Be ye no more children. In malice be ye children, in understanding be men. Wisdom is the principle thing, therefore get wisdom - and in all thy getting, get understanding.

Just to toss out a few verses relevant to this subject in my mind. The whole of scripture is an allegory - Ps 78:2, "dark sayings", Matt 13, "without a parable spake he not unto them". But I am not upset with literalists, we live in a literal world, you have to get specific about things to move along. I'm just not very literal myself, not anymore.

In immaturity, two trees, tree of knowledge, tree of life. In immaturity, two gods, the Lord and the Devil. (Both out to kill you, how do they differ??? Ah but you must needs die!) In maturity, One. One Governance over All. But danged complicated.
I'm not sure what you're saying here, help me out. Please speak plainly because I am somewhat of a literalist.

I sounds like you're saying that God put it there because it is actually the "tree of life" and it is necessary to eat from it in order to survive?

If that is the case, why would he tell them not to eat from it?

Furthermore, if that's the case, how is it that we've survived, and not eaten from this legendary tree? I mean, I have a whole bunch of trees in my back yard and I haven't eaten from any of them. On days like today, I like to think my garden IS the Garden of Eden. And it has trees in it. And at least one snake (it's a garter snake, neato). And rabbits and ants and spiders and wasps, some really funky ghost-white aphids that eat my rose bush...it's a veritable noah's ark here in my back yard. Except, it has trees. From which I have not eaten. And yet, here I am. Surviving.

Amazing, that.

Why did God put the Tree of Knowledge in the Garden of Eden?

Wow, three assumptions in one question. 1. that there is this god thing. 2. that there is a tree of knowledge. 3. that there actually was a garden of eden.
