Sin- Hamartia-to miss the mark

What does missing the mark mean?

Hamartia is a word in the times of Jesus that was used in archery. If one took aim at a target and missed the target one was said to have missed the mark or sinned.

Jesus’ target in coming into the world was the salvation of the world.

So if the world is not saved Jesus missed the mark.

The greater hope believes Jesus did not miss the mark; therefore, the world will be saved.

How do you people who believe in eternal torment or annihilation believe Jesus never sinned, yet believe He missed the target for which He shot for?

IMO to believe Jesus never sinned and the belief in eternal torment or annihilation cannot be reconciled. In these two doctrines, either Jesus sinned/missed the mark or He never came to save the world.

I had a hunch this would be the point of the thread when I read the title!
Nice question. No, Jesus didn't fail. He is succeeding everyday, and will not stop until He has retrieved the last sheep and lamb.

I think we sometimes don't really understand what happened when the veil of the temple was rent in two. There was no more barrier between man and God. No separation.

To the Jews, it was a scandal. To God, it was His IMMENSE Love!! He's all OURS, folks! And we're all HIS!
(I believe it was always that way, but man couldn't believe it then, and even now, few are able to accept it.)

Blessings,
brian

He never missed the mark before Jesus came to save the world the rightous people were being sent to hell and people who the Lord liked were lost to the Lord God. ,... Through the effort of the Lord God he managed to save a few people though the blessing of Isaac and keep them in Abraham bosom until Jesus payed the honor of the cross and then the devil lost his authority because Jesus took back what Adam had lost in the garden because Adam was plan one for the Children of God but failed and lost the authority to the devil until Jesus came and took it back and he came save the rightous only and not the people lost at the end of their lives .... You should pray for the Baptism of Holy Spirit for he bring this understanding that he gives to all the believer who believe that ask him to come and bless their lives a gift of Jesus Christ, and Holy Spirit brings revelation and understanding of all the ages of Christ..........

1 John 4:14
14 And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son the Saviour of the world.

VERY observant!
How insidious our self-righteousness is! We all must look at what's happening INSIDE us! THERE is where the battle is bring waged.

Blessings,
brian

It's also worth noting and giving meditation of the fact that it was God in Christ reconciling the world to Himself , and not reconciling Himself to the world.

That's a very good point and this is a very good thread....I never thought of reconciliation in those terms and it makes absolutely perfect sense!! If Christ had sinned He would have missed the mark but He did not sin and so He accomplished what He set out to do, which was save the world!

exactly sis, He is faithful to His calling so the wolrd MUST be saved, any other beleif eternal torment or annihilation makes Jesus unfaithful to His calling.
