YES! They are a cult and are misled. I used to be a member of this church years ago and thank God I left it. Many nice people I may add, but they do not believe in laying of hands, speaking in tongues and gifts of the holy spirit can be done today. They say it was only done when the apostles walked the earth and this is not true!

Therefore, they are teaching a false doctrine.

Also, I may add that the main leader starter of this cult, from last I heard was living in luxury nice house somewhere in the south. I believe from the churches members donations part of it.

A leader in the manhattan church was Arthur Grayson and he was such an a arrogant person. He once called me an jerk because I was asking questions about the gifts of the holy spirit and why they do not practive this in this church. Eventually I quit that church and went elsewhere where they do believe in the gifts.

Even the bible says that each person receives gift and this should be used as a christian. But this church, nyc church of christ, do not believe in these gifts that can be used today. Thank God I left this cult. And yes, they believe that THEY are the real church and will be saved, everyone else wont.

Default NYC church of christ is a cult

Hi Folks

Please stay away from the nyc church of christ...they are indeed a misled bunch of people. They DO NOT believe in the gifts of the holy spirit such as laying of hands, healing, speaking in tongues etc that can be practiced by todays modern Christians.

As a former member, I brought this to the attention of the church leader in the group I attended, arthur grayson and he called me a jerk for questioning him.

The bible says that these gifts are given to Christians by the holy spirit and can should be used today.

But this church does not embrace this bible teaching and they are saying that these gifts were only active during the times the apostles walked the earth...that 12 apostles which was so many years ago.

If you choose to give your heart to Jesus Christ, ask God to lead you into a holy spirit filled church where they embrace the gifts and follow true Christian doctrine. This church DOES NOT do this they preach a false doctrine. In my opinion it is a dead church and misleading people.

In the past, they did a news report on them and showed how their main leader, I believe his name is skip something, was living a flashy rich lifestyle somewhere in texas. Also, a married leader openly rebuked this church in front of the whole church and told them that they are spending the money on things they should not be spending it on. They were escorted off the stage.

So I feel the need to let you all know this....I used to be a member but not anymore. When I questioned as to why they do not practice the gifts of the holy spirit...I was called a jerk by the church leader arthur grayson. I m not sure if he is still there anymore, but this man was so arrogant and was the opposite personality of how was Jesus was.

Many good churches out there and who believe and use the power of the holy spirit because the church NEEDS him. The nyc church of christ to some degree, deny the spirit by not allowing him to manifest himself using the gifts that God is making available for christians today.

Yes there are many Christians today that do not believe in laying of hands, healing and speaking in tounges that can be practiced by today's modern Christians. But it does not mean these people do not have the holy spirit within them or do not have the gifts of the spirit within them. Even if they do not believe in that God has given them gifts still.

In the NT tongues was a sign of receiving the Holy Spirit. Paul and the boys ie, Phillip and Luke etc always baptized in Jesus Name commanded in Matt 28:19 and Acts 2:38 this generally followed with the infilling. Only a few churches teach the scriptural sequence getting it all screwed up in their lack of understanding. It's annoying. They mean well just not nurtured in the supernatural which they are not linked. If they were you would never shut them up lol!

I am sorry, but you have no idea what you are talking about. I have gone to this church before and they do not deny you the ability to go to other churchs. The people there are kind and loving and are only trying to follow the bible, which is trying to establish a relationship with God by following Jesus' actions. They do not force people to so anything they don't want to. No one forces vistors to return, stay, or get baptized. They do not manipulate people into attending bible studies or single people out. You all think this church is a cult because of what you hear- which most of it is not true.
And let's say, for instance, someone outside of the church did feel harassed by a single member of the church. Who ever that member may be was wrong in what they did and misrepresented the NYCCOC. NYCCOC does not teach the followers to manipulate and do anything possible to get people baptized. All churches have their fault, but NYCCOC is not a cult becuase of them. Just because you don't completly understand what they do or teach doesn't mean you have to deam them a cult.

They believe they are the only ones who are saved. Part of the process is being baptized THERE, in a church of Christ building, and having your name on their membership role.

If this is not done, they say you are not saved.

They teach that they are THE ONLY ONES going to heaven. They claim they "aren't a denomination," but that is exactly what they are; they are not only a denomination, they are a cult. If you belong there, you are forbidden from even visiting another church, say, a Baptist church....they claim you will lose your "salvation."
Churches of Christ are not cults nor are they a denomination, period. They are legalistic especially with no music.

I do not know about how widespread "cultic" behavior is in the church of Christ today; my dealings with them were long ago, so things may have changed. I will never know.
I did encounter that behavior described by others at a church of Christ in Texas; Although they were very hostile to outsiders such as myself. The other items I heard, telling prospective members that they could have no involvement with other churches or congregations, monopolizing a member's time with programs and projects, seemed to be spot on. But the people were generally hateful and used their religion as a justification for their hatred of anyone and everyone else.

I think it is unacceptable to hate just for the basis of hate, but then again, I am not part of the church of Christ or Isis either.
