Hi Mike I don' have time to respond to your whole post but this one part struck me because it gave me fits in the past. The correct verse reads

Eph 4:8 Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men.
Eph 4:9 (Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth?
Eph 4:10 He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.)

It does not say he led a host of captives it says he led captivity captive.
I struggled to make sense out of it till finally it hit me. Jesus after he ascended on high had also descended into the lower parts of the earth.

In a lot of the Bible "earth" is a metaphor for man. So after he ascended upon high he descended into the heart of man and led captivity captive.
He came into the heart of his elect and captured the things that make us captives to sin. We are all slaves of sin and what captivates us into sin is Lust of the eye, Lust of the flesh, and Pride of life. Jesus took "captivity"
captive, he removes it from the elect so they are set free from sin and no longer under it spell. And he gave gifts,--- freedom from sin, age-during life with him, salvation from death ---to men. This is a wonderful message to those who under stand it. Jesus frees us from our slavery to sin.

Hi Mercy777 The word in this passage is RUACH which literally means wind or breath. Remenber God breathed into Adam and he became a living soul. God's breath is what keeps us alive and when we die our body returns to the earth and the breath returns to God. Our thought are no more we are dead until resurrection.
