If it wasn't necessary to confess our sins to receive forgiveness, why would John feel a need to write this? Now I know we cannot confess every sin because who keeps a running scorecard of so many? That's why when we do commit a sin that we know needs forgiving and we confess it before God and ask forgiveness, He then forgives us of all unknown sin that we have accumulated up to that point.
I've come to the place where I ask Him to forgive me for what I am - the fruit is going to be what grows from the seed. I need more of the life born of God, that which doesn't sin. (1 John 5:18)

That's why I quoted Luke 24:47.....because IT IS important to ask for forgiveness of our sins, all of the time imo. I just don't believe, according to the other scriptures, that in order to be "saved" we have to ask forgiveness. We just have to believe and receive. The asking of forgiveness of sins should shortly follow!!

hmmm...I will have to meditate on that, Ilene. That is an interesting point. But I do think that a good outgrowth of following John's comment will be a daily, conscious act of submission to God, if for no other reason, than just to demonstrate to Him how sorry we are for the sins we have committed throughout the day, without regard to whether or not we believe it affects our salvation, which of course it does not. I find that when I get on my knees and humble myself before Him every night before I go to bed it really edifies my spirit and brings my pride-o-meter down considerably, knowing I am just a speck that He somehow loves more than all the universe.
