I've never heard of this guy but he preaches with a sincerity that is all to lacking in the ministry today. It's refreshing.

James White is popular for his Debates. He has also written quite a few books.

Some say he is motivated by his love of God, others believe he is just self aggrandizing and likes the recognition.

I'd be careful about following such individuals. If you learn something from them, which can be proved true, fine. But people like him are no different than anyone else. Maybe more motivated, but by what exactly?

You don't need to read uninspired books, or write them, to understand scripture.

Here is a list of his many books, articles, and debates:
Alpha and Omega Ministries, The Christian Apologetics Ministry of James R. White

Keep in mind: Ecl. 12:12
"But beyond this, my son, be warned: the writing of many books is endless, and excessive devotion to books is wearying to the body."

Also, debating is not a way to promote scriptural truth. Neither Jesus nor his disciples used that method to teach.

I looked at his website and it seems his primary focus is refuting those who suggest that the King James Version of the Bible is the only "right" one.

Other than that, I didn't see much.

You are correct.

I guess what I was trying to get at is inline with 1 Tim 6:4 "he is conceited and understands nothing; but he has a morbid interest in controversial questions and disputes about words, out of which arise envy, strife, abusive language, evil suspicions,"

Many debates on differences of religious doctrines today revolve around etymology.
