What did the disciples have in common ? What were their names ? What did they do for a living ? What is the difference between a disciple and an apostle ?

I found this explanation:

Disciples:

-Disciple is derived from the Greek word, pronounced math-ay-tes, which means learner, or student. The Biblical usage involved not just learning, but also agreement and acceptance of the teacher as a leader.

-While the disciples of Jesus Christ are overwhelmingly the most often referred to, there is also some mention of John The Baptist (Matthew 9:14) and the Pharisees (Matthew 22:16) having disciples.

-Followers of Christ were not called Christians until the founding of the church at Antioch Of Syria (Acts 11:26). Before then, Christians were called disciples of Jesus Christ.

-The apostles began as disciples (Matthew 10:1). There were far fewer apostles than disciples - all apostles were disciples, but not all disciples became apostles.

a·pos·tle (ə-pŏs'əl)
n.

Apostle:
-One of a group made up especially of the 12 disciples chosen by Jesus to preach the gospel.
-A missionary of the early Christian Church.
-A leader of the first Christian mission to a country or region.

The 12 disciples were
Simon (also called Peter)
Andrew
James
John
Philip
Bartholomew
Thomas
Matthew (tax collector)
Thaddeus
Simon
Judas Iscariot

Jesus called them He didn't draft them, force them or ask them to volunteer. He calls us today and doesn't twist our arms and make us do something we don't want to do. We can choose the join or remain behind. They were called from all walks to life. Fisherman, tax collector, political activists, rich and poor, educated and uneducated. God can use anyone who is willing.

There's only 11 here....I think you forgot one, ILNC

It may be another James....I learned of "James the lesser" and "James the greater".....don't have a clue as to what greater and lesser mean.....but, talk about giving someone a complex?? How would you like to be called a lesser?

The word "disciple" refers to a "learner" or "follower." The word "apostle" refers to "one who is sent out." While Jesus was on earth, the twelve were called disciples. The 12 disciples followed Jesus Christ, learned from Him, and were trained by Him. After Jesus' resurrection and ascension, Jesus sent the disciples out (Matthew 28:18-20; Acts 1:8) to be His witnesses. They were then referred to as the twelve apostles. However, even when Jesus was still on earth, the terms disciples and apostles were used somewhat interchangeably, as Jesus trained them and sent them out.

Don't know if this will help anyone, but my dd and I developed the following system to help us remember the names of the 12 apostles: MATT, 4 J's, BPPS.

Matthew
Andrew
Thaddeus
Thomas

James
John
Judas
James

Bartholomew
Peter
Phillip
Simon

The tricky part is remembering who replaced Judas! Anyone?
