I'm too lazy to look up the name and the details right now, but some years ago, someone did some sort of "calculation" based on the stories and years given in old testament writings, and determined that creation began on such-and-such a date, approximately 6000 years ago.

Thank you for acknowledging that not all Christians believe that.

Some refuse to lift the veil of ignorance over the OT and understand their real purpose. They treat the OT as a history book . . . instead of as spiritual revelations and prophesies to prepare the way for Christ. They treat it as the infallible and literal word of God . . . instead of as spiritual "lessons " and morality plays for our ignorant primitive ancestors. The prophesies they contain are God-inspired revelations to predict and validate the emergence of Christ.

RESPONSE:

Either the events described in scripture actually happened and they are history, or they didn't really happen and they are not history. (They may be fiction, allegory, "inspired sayings" just not real events).

There are a lot of "holy books" among the world's various religions. Most claim to be inspired by God in some fashion despite contradicting other religions' books.

People are free to believe whatever they want. But they shouldn't confuse these beliefs with facts of history.

You really need to stop trying to place everythng into mutually exclusive "either/or," "black or white" dichotomies, ancient. Reality is far more complex than that.

According to the scriptures, Adam was created six thousand years ago ... and the creation myth is taken literally so that they believe the creation of the entire universe took place in a matter of 6 days.

The belief that Christ would return at the end of the sixth millennium from the time of Adam can be traced back as far as the epistle of Barnabas ...

Quote:
Barnabas 15:4
Give heed, children, what this meaneth; He ended in six days. He
meaneth this, that in six thousand years the Lord shall bring all
things to an end; for the day with Him signifyeth a thousand years;
and this He himself beareth me witness, saying; Behold, the day of
the Lord shall be as a thousand years. Therefore, children, in six
days, that is in six thousand years, everything shall come to an end.

James Ussher, an Archbishop from Ireland, counted the geneologies in Genesis to reach a creation date of 4004 B.C., which was associated with the King James Bible and thus became the most popular date, despite many varying dates throughout early history (i.e. Jews hold the creation date according to the Hebrew calendar as being 3761 B.C, and the Septuagint dates it as 5500 B.C.).

Ussher's date just stuck among most conservatives due to the KJV.

Early church fathers like Origen and Augustine did not hold to a literal creation. Although some of the Protestant Reformers held a literal creation view which kept YEC alive.

During the 18th Century onward, belief in YEC declined due to the advancement of geology. It was then revitalized with the Fundamentalist movement in the 20th century when they rejected evolution.
