And as David said, "I am in great distress [because of my sin]. Let me fall into the hand of the LORD, for his mercy is very great, but do not let me fall into the hand of man [because they'd just as soon torment me for eternity]!"
Unlike Saul, did you notice how David found mercy and grace this side of hell? Two kings with two different outcomes, one is in heaven and the other is in hell. Mercy and grace are found in this life, not the next.
A child is too young to be held accountable for right and wrong. Meanwhile, those who are of the age of accountability, they will indeed be held accountable. Sin is a horrible thing. Innocent people down through the years have suffered tremendously because of it, and God will judge it all.
Romans 12:19 - ...for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.
So the Adult Christian that gets caught and goes to jail for 18 years has no other consequences but the Adult Non-Christian gets 18 plus an eternity of torture for the same crime? And the difference between the two? One confessed to be a Christian and the other did not... I find that highly suspect on many levels.
You wouldn't burn a child's hand to teach them right from wrong but you advocate burning a whole adult after it's too late to teach him anything?

So that means that any afterlife of torturous burning is really in this life not the next... Right? How is mercy and grace found in this life but eternal torture is not??

We all reap what we sow, you included. Saul reaped what he had sown in his life, in this life, it's you putting him in hell................not the scriptures.
Whether you like it or not you are reaping what you have sown in this life too.

Sure enough ... it's exceedintly better to experience Love and Grace in this lifetime than not to.
But you missed the point ... David knew that the LORD's mercy is VERY GREAT. That's Love's nature. And completely different than man's bloodthirsty and veangeful nature, which mandates infinite torment.

The LORD's mercy and grace are indeed very great, and that is His divine love. But, if one ultimately rejects these things in this life, then the Word makes in clear that eternal damnation is his/her destination. With respect to being bloodthirsty, that's a false accusation. But, then again, those who stand for truth are always deemed intolerant and/or unreasonable.

Really? Who called Jesus intolerant? The pharisees hated how tolerant he was. But I'll give you that many people think God's/Love's mercy and grace is extravagant and unreasonable.
"Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. LOVE NEVER ENDS."
NEVER. (from the Greek oudepote = NEVER, nothing at any time, never at any time)

Matthew 23
[29] Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous,
[30] And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.
[31] Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets.
[32] Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers.
[33] Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?

Yes, precisely. The pharisees who were so very sure that they were God's favorites, and that everyone but them should be on the receiving end of God's wrath, who took offense at how tolerant Jesus was of those horrible sinners that they deemed unworthy of God's grace. Did the self-righteous pharisees really think that they could escape the "damnation of hell", the krisis [judgment] of gehenna?
We all face judgment, we face the consequences of our non-loving actions. And when God/Love's righteous judgments (not man's vengeful idea of eternal torment) are in the earth, the people learn righteousness. The God that is LOVE that is extravagant and UNREASONABLE and NEVER ENDING.
Of course God told people not to take vengeance! He knew that man's nature would demand and extract an unholy toll on others. He saved "vengeance" for himself, because his "vengeance" is LOVE THAT NEVER ENDS and which destroys sin, not the person.
