I believe in two conditions which could be described as Hell, and neither one of them involves literal fire.
The first is the condition in which I believe the unrepentant sinner who has not accepted Jesus Christ's sacrifice will find himself upon death. I believe that when such a person repents of his sins and accepts Christ's atonement on his behalf, he will be released from this state of mental torment and will await his resurrection in a state of peace and rest.
The second is the state of outer darkness that the sons of perdition will find themselves in after the final judgment. The only individuals I believe will end up in this state after the Last Judgment are those who have committed the unforgivable sin. I believe there will be only a tiny fraction of mankind who will not end up in Heaven.

When i was a fundamentalist i believed it was a literal fire, and handed out hundreds and hundreds of tracts with cartoon pictures of people burning in hell. For some unknown reason i also believed you were burning in solitary confinement.

Do you know what the description of Hell really is?
It is the complete absence of GOD.

That's what the LDS belief is. We just don't believe many people are going to find themselves in that condition. We call it "Outer Darkness," because it is a place that is completely void of God's incredible glory.

A literal fire, yes, but not an earthly one.

Is it the body or the soul that burns?

Could you elaborate? I don't understand what a literal non-earthly fire would be.

I think it might be both a literal and spiritual fire. The Bible says it is in the "depths of the earth". We know it is pretty hot down there...
I do not believe hell is this present life we now experience living on earth, regardless of how bad conditions may be.
