Why is the Bible Your Authority.
I don't really post much any more, though I still skim occasionally. But someone said something which caused a question in my mind. So as the title say, Why is the bible your authority?

Because I believe. ........
........that it is the inspired word of God...a letter of love filled with excellant information from Him toward me concerning my eternal life and what I need to do in this life to assure my life is spent with Him for eternity.
I would be lost without His word in this dark, wicked, evil world...I would be a contributor of its darkness...in its wickedness...in its evil. I once was...had it not been for His word to guide me and teach me a better way...only God knows where I would be right now...if I would even be alive...probably not.
Because I believe. ........
........that I was created by God and He created a need within me to know Him and His Son, my Savior, Jesus Christ.
The Bible is the word of God my Creator...an instruction book...a book like none other ever written...inspired by the Holy Spirit...written by real men who actually lived...some having actually spoken to His Son my Savior...looked into His precious eyes...ate with Him...touched Him...followed Him...learned from His teachings and the way He lived His life. He was an example to them...that amazes me!
Because I believe. ........
........that His word is the Example I must follow to live...and without Him I am nothing.
Amen.

What did the lay Christian do in the first 400 years of Christianity and really even after that? No Bible and all. What did they do for Authority? Why would any of them let themselves be martyred for Jesus Christ if they didn't know Him.

I answered you DNick.
You asked why is the Bible my authority.
I answered, Because I believe. in God as being my Creator...therefore His Word is precious to me. Another word I could use is Faith... Because I have faith. and it comes to me through the Holy Spirit as I read His inspired written Words. His word gives me excellant information and guidance...His word tells me where the power I have to overcome evil comes from...His word tells me what His will is for my life and what I need to do be in His will. Bottom line, I need His guidance...He is my Source...He is my everything, and I need to hear from Him on a daily basis. I love Him and I need Him.
How would I know about anything that truly matters if it were not for this Beautiful Book about the history and life of Jesus Christ and His life in service to His Father my Creator ?
The Bible is my Example on how to live...eternally...and this is what truly matters to me.

That's a great non answer Verna. All you did is repeat that you believe in the book because you believe in it. Why THAT book? Don't get me wrong, I believe in it too completely. But you didn't really answer it, even though you claim to, on why. What makes it authoritative? What makes it God's word? Let's narrow it down to the New Testament though. That's my real question.

I was raised in a Christian home and that is the influence of my life. I know that how we are brought up is not necessarily the truth. But I have also witnessed many people live their lives trying to ignore and eliminate their upbringing from thier life and of the people I have known, they seem to always struggle with that.
For a lot of my life I just went with what I was raised with becauee it was easier, when I started questioning a lot of it was a point where when I needed my beliefs to be real they failed me.
However, I also realized the people I talked about before, their trying to deny things failed them as well. What I did was, instead of trying to eliminate everything I was raised with, I eventually seen that I didn't have to believe everything nor eliminate everything, so I started to see what would work to make life better.
Perhaps some people who say the bible is false and God isn't real are correct. That fact doesn't change that disbelieving in God didn't seem likely to do anything for me either. The bible is a great authority in my life because when using it to find what can work to make life better, I have not found it to fail me.

Well then...by all means...why don't you and DNick answer the question for me....have at it.
I gave you my best answer. I guess it's just not good enough for either of you...but it's a perfect answer to me.
God Bless.

They listened to the teachings of a bunch of guys that actually walked the earth with Christ. They were written down....we call it the "Bible". Peter referred to Paul's writings as "scripture".
Of course, some strayed and chose to follow a church more than the Bible....
