Wow. I always thought etiqrette was a codified form of kindness that could be undersood. Something to make life easier.
They LOVE announcements - and I respond to them
So, do I continue to respond to announhcements of births, weddings, graduations, the normal way - or some other way?
Common knowlege always tells people "NOT to get down to their level"
Honey is not working.

Respond the normal courteous way . . . but not overboard . . . no Honey.

I know on some level what they want - a big blow up that would give the ORU grad an excuse to encourage my FIL to cut my husband out of the will.
However, I do not want this repugnant literature sent to my house. My husband asked them not to do this. They did not respond.

Literature can do nothing on its own. Just put it in File 13 (trash) when it arrives. Ignore provocations and live your lives as you wish . . . minimize contact. The more of an issue you make of things the worse they will get.

Sheena
I had a Cient (mental) last year that explained the whole thing to me (with Bible in Hnad)
Here is the basis of what he said.
He told me that the only thing that is important in this life is what Paul wrote about being saved by Jesus. He says that our lives on this planet do not matter. If someone has accepted Jesus then they will spend eternity with jesus and that is ALL that matters
His exact words were "You can be a murderer, rapist, you can kill babies and God does not care" He also metnioned that charity, good deeds good works do not matter to God. All that matters is an acceptance of him. "If you accept him then you are saved and nothing else you do matters"
he was a Christian Fundie.
So according to him, "good manners" would fall into the category of "Unneccesary" Along with everything from holding the door open for some one else all the way down to the sanctity of life......
Heartsong said it right. Avoid and Ignore them as much as possible. They seem to enjoy causing pain and strife in others. They are negatives. Avoid them as much as possible.

1. Since I am a graduate of a secular, and well regarded, university, my MIL, the second time I met her; asked me "if I was a virgen" She defended her question by adding that she "heard that -----University was full of communists and sex addicts"
2. Gave a gift to my MIL and she said that "she didn't care for it"
3. FIL asked me if I "was saved"
4. Sent out invitations to my daughters confirmation ( Lutheran ELCA)and my SIL sent a card 9 months later to my 16 yo daughter, bragging about herself - (that she is a subsitute school teacher at a "Christian Academy, that her children all attend or attend this Academy, and that she is a graduate of "the most esteemed Christian University in the U.S. - Oral Roberts) with a cockamamie story that she had lost the gift back in May and found it in November. (?) The book was from a Fundie view point. She also encouraged my daughter to attend a "good Christian College - even if you can't get into ORU!" (my daughter is an honors student, and ORU is not on the radar)
These are just a few examples of the boorish behavior that we have experienced over the years.
I would never even think to send my nieces or nephews literature from a mainline denominational view point for any occasion.
We have never sent them political propaganda from a liberal democratic perspective either.
Has anyone else experienced this?
Any advice about what do do about this woman my SIL?
I just sent a wedding gift to my niece in California - $100, although we were not invited.
I sent $50 dollars to a nephew who graduated from High School.
But THEY are persistantly rude and nasty.
Any advice? I am tire of this. Twenty years of snide comments, propaganda, and preaching.
Any advice?

They are like that because of who they are, not because they are Christian. Yes, some Christians have bad manners, as do many non-Christians, but I don't think you should assume all Christians are rude, because they are not (and I think you know that). I notice some posters already jumped at the opportunity to slam Christians in general, but they are simply showing the same spirit as your in-laws.

See there are many Christians and very weak agnostic believers that do not stay in the presence of the Lord and , discern their mouth with the devil who is listening , and the weak fear of God who also is listening .... and every thing that comes out of their mouth . apart from the prayers that they do say is public , would leave one looking to the door to get out of there to protect your ears ..... Basically there are many teachers who babble on and babble on and on always hating Christians and never can find a single thing good to say , and these are preachers teaching the children of God how to be ....God help us in Jesus name....

I would love to do that. I have done that. It is seriously akin to showering a brick wall with love. A judgmental, mean, humorless, and nasty brick wall.

My first impulse is to agree. I am not sure to whom you are referencing in this post. Please expound.

"Cast not your pearls before swine . . ." Sheena. Just be courteous, polite, and do the normal decent things . . . but be unreactive to any of their provocations. Ignore as much as possible and minimize contact. You control the mails . . . so filter the trash that comes in.

people are put in our lives to teach us.. it may seem very challenging but its possible..
i read this recently.. a 5 year old wrote this about love- i wll share
if you want to learn to love better start with someone that you hate..( i think this is pretty genius kids are very smart and we can learn a lot from them
you have been put in this situation so that u can rise above it .. once above it, you can see clear and act above it.
dont let other peoples fears and heavy loads make u heavy..
jsut take one day at a time and who knows maybe u might be pleasantly surprised at what happens.
its an uphill journey -"the moutain is steep but the view is beautiful."
good luck and all the best
