John 21:21-23
Peter turned and saw the disciple following whom Jesus loved, the one who had also reclined upon his chest during the supper and had said, "Master, who is the one who will betray you?" When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, "Lord, what about him?" Jesus said to him, "If it is My Will that he should remain alive until I return, what concern is it of yours? You follow me."
Jesus is basically saying to Peter, "I am going to return while John is still alive but after you are dead."
True to His word, Peter died in Rome circa 64-67 AD, roughly five years before the fall of Jerusalem in 70 AD, the year Preterists believe Jesus fulfilled His Word and returned. John was still alive.
I'm not getting a lot of arguments on this as is usually customary when someone suggests Christ may have already fulfilled His promise to return. I wonder why?

There are a few things preterism has wrong. It is folly to stick something like the Holy Spirit into a nice and tidy package all wrapped up with beautiful ribbon!

But doesn't the following verse indicate that Jesus might not return during John's life?
Joh 21:23 yet Jesus did not say to him, that he doth not die, but, `If him I will to remain till I come, what--to thee?'

I don't think so. John is merely trying to clarify that Jesus did not mean that John would live forever, only that he (John) would still be living when Jesus returned.
Gee, I thought it was pretty clear, Betsy. Jesus' own words indicate He promised that John would still be alive when He (Jesus) returned to earth. How do you ready it?

I agree with Thrillobyte -- the disciples were saying to each other that Jesus had said that John would not die and it was being pointed out that John would only remain until Jesus came.....
Joh 21:22 Jesus is saying to him, "If I should be wanting him to be remaining till I am coming, what is it to you? You be following Me!"
Joh 21:23 This word, then, came out to the brethren, that that disciple is not dying. Now Jesus did not say to him that he is not dying, but, "If I should be wanting him to be remaining till I am coming, what is it to you?
