... A list of sins huh? -- That's an interesting question which leads us to the mindset of the religious Pharisees when Jesus was on earth. They were so concerned with 'listing sins' that them had compiled a list of approximately 600+ "sins!" Of course, their concern was with listing the sins that everyone else should keep, but, which they themselves did not keep. Of them, Jesus said, "Unless your righteousness exceeds that of the Pharisees, you will not enter the Kingdom of heaven."

Then, there are the Ten Commandments; the keeping of which many conclude is the way to 'please God.' But, we all understand from our own experience, and also from Bible teaching, that no one is able to perfectly keep the commandments -- and that the 'law is actually a teacher to reveal our own inability to keep the law ... leading us to recognize our own need for forgiveness and reconcilliation with God. Further, we learn from the Bible that if we try to reach and please God by keeping rules and laws, "we've got to keep every one, since breaking one makes us guilty of all".

The reality is that God has the power to 'force' everyone to keep all the laws and commandments ... and never sin -- if that was what he was really after. But, when asked about the 'greatest commandments', Jesus listed two things that we might think would represent the most egregious sins. Yet, He responded, "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind, soul and strength" ... and "Love your neighbor as yourself." ---- Boy, that's hardly fair is it? --- At least, if he had named a couple of really big sins, like murder and adultery, some people might hope to achieve righteousness by keeping them.... but, love! --- that's a horse of a different color! How can one ever measure the keeping of love-based commandments?

The greatest 'sin/s' are choosing NOT to love, trust, believe and obey God, but, instead, to love the things of this world and the lust of the flesh ... more than God or our neighbor. How do we know when we are doing or not doing that? Well, habitually breaking the outward laws and commands reveals to US that we have not submitted our lives and hearts to God. That is what Jesus meant when he said, "If you love me, you will obey my commands." You see, Jesus did not obey God in order to BECOME God's Son, but, because He already was/is God's Son. If we, likewise, are Sons of God, the same 'fruit' will be evident in our lives.

So, is there a big 'list' of sins that will keep us out of heaven or from pleasing God? No, because believers who trust depend on Christ for their relationship with God are, "saved by faith through Grace", not by rule-keeping.... and 'Yes', because habitual outward sin in our lives reveals that our hearts are in rebellion and we are separated from God by our refusal of the love and grace He offers through Christ alone.

If they are, then they are committing these sins on a daily basis, but the family goes to church every week and never miss church, carry a Bible to church, etc.

I am sure in my mind that crimes against people like stealing, killing, etc. are sins.

Pot, beer, and cursing seems to be ok for this family.
Beer different than liquor?
I'm confused by what I see with this family.

Does something have to be against the laws of a state, or country, to be a sin?

What is a complete list of sins in the eyes of God?

An interesting "list of sins" that somebody compiled: A Bible study on Sin (Part-6A)

That list is not by any means "complete". The incredible multitude of things that can be construed as sin are so numerous and convoluted that none of us would ever be blameless in the eyes of God, were it not for Jesus.
. No, something does not necessarily need to be against the laws of a state, or country, to be a sin. It only needs to be contrary to God's law. For example: not believing in Jesus isn't against the laws of our country or any state, but it is a sin in the eyes of God.

As someone has already stated, if you are a Christian then His Spirit in you has ways of letting us know when something is, or is not, a sin. If we walk by faith, walk in the Spirit, then we needn't be constantly worried about sin.

That pretty much covers all the ground, sparrow. There is not a sin that is not a violation of the commands to love God and each other.

Here is something that discusses among other things, strong drink:

Here is a sample from the middle of the text of interest, but you ought to read the whole and in context--thus, I am deliberately leaving out the meat of it. I encourage you to stop now, go get your Bible, and read Deut 14:22 and onwards with your own eyes...
Here is a section giving specific instructions concerning "the tithe":
Deut 14:26 (NAS) "And you may spend the money for whatever your heart desires, for oxen, or sheep, or wine, or strong drink, or whatever your heart desires; and there you shall eat in the presence of the Lord your God and rejoice, you and your household."
As you can see, the Lord in the Old Testament Torah describes a very different practice of the tithe than what we moderns have been taught in our religious traditions of men.
For the Jews the tithe was a "party" (or feast, if you like) and was to be "consumed in the sight of the Lord". God's command to tithe includes consuming "whatever your heart desires", including "strong drink"! Imagine using up a tenth of your agricultural increase every year in a single party! Wasteful, extravagant, and flesh mortifying; yet God's clear command. With this Jewish (and historic) perspective, no wonder the prophet Malachi (3:8-11) asks: "How have we robbed from You, Lord, by not tithing?" If you understand the Jewish idea of party-tithing, you will appreciate his question. God commands His people to enjoy themselves by bringing the bounty together so that "There may be food in my house" and then feasting and enjoying themselves in His sight. - Acts 17:11 Dialog: The Tithe, A Biblical Perspective

This may help you understand certain things that modern christians say are a sin and aren't...

I don't believe there's any set 'list' of sins...I prefer to think more of Sin, plural, as a state of separation from God. Anything that separates one from God is a sin. Getting angry is no less a sin than murdering somebody, although the difference is in the magnitude. Qualitatively it's the same thing, that's why Jesus compared hating one's brother to murder.

Anything that is done to another that is something one would not want done to themselves is a sin.

Seems to me that History Channel had a pretty good series on this topic a few years ago

Link to HC Store Selling DVD's

I also see that there are some YouTube presentations available. I have not checked these out.
Yes, we have that from HC and it is excellent and it covers sin and gets the job done. We have the two-disk set and got it on sale at the website. To beat, God's laws have a pattern and a beat and when you truly accept and understand God's presence and importance in your life, you can just kind of feel your way around to avoiding sin as much as your human body and mind are able.

The Bible lists 667 sins.

I am sure if you searched you could find a nice printout of all of them.

When considering the 'Ten Commandments' a great many churches mess up #1.

Lust of the eyes
lust of the flesh
Pride of life.

dont judge them too hard, there are many churchgoers that are full of vanity. they live, breath, and crap pride. Full of themselves and live for impressing others. i rather smoke pot and drink a few beers ( which i dont do) than be one of those who sweat vanity. At the end we can find fault with any person we wish. But if we try to look for the good we can also find that. It is just the beast within us, our carnal nature, that is our biggest obstacle in following Christ.

Well that pretty much includes everything that is worth doing in the eyes of Christians who believe that there is such a thing as "sin".

Supposedly anything in excess is a sin and your church-going drunken sailors are committing sin big time. If you're a Christian.

Here's a good place to start if you're concerned about that sort of thing:

Galatians 5:19-21

New International Version (NIV)

19 The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Edit to add: I just noticed your screen name......that's my name too!
