1. Reptiles and certain aquatic creatures are the only ones that don't care for their young ones, whether they are still inside a shell or able to breathe.
2. Reptiles and certain aquatic creatures are the only ones that are totally independent the moment they are born.
3. Of all the creatures, snakes are the only ones that have a bite that are venomous from the moment they breathe!
Hence, Satan is compared to a snake because he doesn't care about anyone else other than himself (selfish), he seeks to be independent (domineering), and is venomous to try and destroy everything/everyone (destroyer of peace and life both in family and in friendship)!
You may bring cuckoos and other creatures but this is to drilldown to snakes. I hope this is something interesting.
Lots of creatures are venomous and some reptiles care for their young, like alligators/crocs.
Who knows why the Genesis writer picked a snake. Maybe 'cause they crawl on the ground....and as such, kind of freak (most) people out.
Or, the whole story could be a metaphor like so much of the Bible. Which makes it tricky reading.
Alligator mother protects but doesnt feed or care for them AFAIK.
Like I said, it's about the snakes that are venomous, independent, selfish depicting Satan. Snake is not Satan but the character is used as a reference.

Yes, I think the author of Genesis 3 picked a snake because there is some sort of inherent antipathy between humans and snakes that may have an evolutionary basis, venomous snakes were prevalent in the area, and snakes (like my five cats) do have kind of a "smarter than you" supercilious expression on their faces. Besides, the Genesis snake was not originally identified with Satan at all and is described as being wily and subtle, which is hardly evil. I've tried to picture Genesis 3 with Eve being tempted by a cow or porcupine, and it's kind of a dud.
And snakes have forked tongues. Meaning when they speak, they talk out of both sides of their mouths. So Satan when he tempts someone with evil, will tell half truths, but in the end its just one big lie. Scripture tells us he is the father of lies.

That's true!
