Yes I have very specific critiques. I already named one. FALSE ADVERTISING.
Say up front that "while we may act loosey - goosy and wild in our services and you can dress as though you just got off a playing field - you may not dance, drink, listen to secular music or vote any way but Republican.""....
My own feeling is that ten minutes to one hour max in most churches will tell you what their orientation is. And in many cases simply the name alone is a good indication.
Religious "advertising" or self-promotions, like secular advertising, is going to put forward what the "advertiser" believes is his best message to attract people.
There really is no perfect church. No matter what church you worship at, I doubt you will find one that you feel is 100% perfect for your worship, 100% of the time.
Mega churches are popular because such large congregations can offer all kinds of opportunities, ministries, help, etc. There are activity groups, support groups, teaching groups, bible studies etc. Plus the chance to meet and fellowship with so many people. A small church may be lacking in some of these ministries since they have only so many people to go around.
Some mega churches do seem more corporate than anything. However, my wife and I worship at a small congregation church, and our biggest complaint lately has been that every other serom seems more about the business aspect of operating the church (financials, land deals, etc) and not about the work of Christ or his gift of Salvation.
Jesus didn't create a Bible. He created a universal church with Peter as it's earthly head. It's still around. I go there. It is non-mega and liturgical.
