Well I am of the view that the bible when read literally(regardless of whether there is literal truth in it or not)rather than by the spirit of it, will do one of two things, either kill you or turn you into a child of hell.

Well let me ask you this, do you live up to your understanding of the verse you posted ?. The truth is you will never know Jesus Christ unless you know he is in you.
Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you fail to meet the test! 2 Cor 13:5

The verse is very simple. Stop trying to make a mountain out of an ant hill.
By this we know that we have come to know Him, if we keep His commandments [to love one-another].
The one who says, "I have come to know Him," and does not keep His commandments is a liar; and the truth is not in him.
But whoever keeps His word [of love] in him the love of God has truly been perfected.
By this we know that we are in Him: Love
Maturity is in the balance of love; and all other considerations.
3 We know that we have come to know him if we obey his commands. 4 The man who says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5 But if anyone obeys his word, God’s love is truly made complete in him. This is how we know we are in him: 6 Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did.
1 John 2
Cimaroon gave you passages telling how we come to know Him. He reveals Himself to us and writes His law on our hearts and causes us to obey and love Him. This passage tells you how to know IF you know him.
The only way one can come to know God today is through the preaching of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, through the Word of God and His sacraments.
Ro 10:17 Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ.
