we are not called simply to emulate Christ as our means of entry into heaven. A Christian is one who trusts in the sacrifice he made by dying on the cross in our place. We should be punished for our sin, but he took it instead of us. If you don't have Christ to pay for your sin you are going to have to pay for them yourself. Thus, the only way to God is to go through Christ.

His own earthly ministry was solely to the lost sheep of the house of Israel, but He did tell His Apostles to take His gospel into all the world.

But the Apostles understood that as meaning only the house of Israel throughout the world. Evidenced by the meeting they had to have to be convinced that God had sent the Gospel to the Gentiles through Paul as we read in Act's.
