I don't know about those denom's you mentioned but every Baptist church I have ever been in still does it. I did not know anyone had stopped.
I personally have never given one and don't plan to start. On the other hand, I have asked that if anyone wanted to discuss my sermon more they can catch me after the service.

I don't see a thing wrong with doing it your way. I have always liked seeing people given a chance to acknowledge their acceptance of Jesus before the gathered church but by no means believe it is a required part of a gathering.

I encourage private repentance and faith. Sometimes I will help "lead" them through it...but there is always public testimony that will follow afterward...if not that day, the next week.

Why private? If we deny Him?? we get married in front of others, get graduated, baptism- helping people pray through is important-, How do you discern who is coming into the church?, I know of a church who had a whole thing with pedophelia going on. They could have lieterally lost a child. An they were oh so surprized, as if there is NO evil lurking to destroy the church. I would be one asking after service, maybe not about the sermon, but allowing the Holy Spirit to have His way. This service might be the only ONE, for that person to make it through -is it our problem or only Gods?
YES!! - as we have a free will, we have to agree to be apart of it all. He uses people. If not why bother to have teachers, preachers etc etc?-- it is a joint endeavor- if not tear down all the church houses,,, for what then? GOD needs nothing-- but He chose to share with us.
Some get caught up in the differing traditions of different camps and denoms and in terminology used, happening here in this thread. But on Pentecost, Peter preached and 3,000 were added to their number. Preaching the gospel then conversion. Call it an altar call or not, but preaching the gospel of Christ and public conversions following have been around since day one of the church.
The posted link on Finney earlier in the thread was one of the worst smears on a historical Christian figure I have ever read, FWIW, all clothed in high falutin' theological garb. Sad the way Christians feel the need to judge one another.
