This morning I was joking with my wife about the Special Sins. The sins that some think rank higher on God's list than others. The kind that get you kicked out of ministry and shunned in some churches if they find out about the special sin you had in your past.
I'm not talking about murder or stealing. Nope. Not drunkeness. Nope those are easily forgiveable. People will even let you slide if you are judgmental or hold grudges.
But...if you are a divorced person, look out! Might as well wear a red D on your chest.
I'll never forget the time I met an ex-pastor. Church of Christ fellow. Yep. His wife ran off with another man and she divorced him. The church board told him he could no long be in ministry, because he was a divorced man.
What makes divorce so special? You can be a ex-felon who sold drugs and killed people and folk are fine with that, but if you are a divorced person...
Matt 19:9: And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery. (NASB)

There is the whole thing of an elder needing to be able to manage his family well. Having said that, if his wife decides to sleep around and runs out on him, I'm not entirely sure it's an automatic reason for dismissal from the ministry.
I had a discussion with a pastor friend recently. He is of the belief that once divorced there is no remarriage ever. His reasoning is that in Matthew 5:32, the Greek says "porneia"...indicating fornication, not adultery only.

Matt 19:9 settles the issue for me. If your spouse runs off with another man and has sex, you are allowed to divorce and remarry.

I honestly need to do some more research on it. The pastor I mentioned suggested that it was in regards to the betrothal period....at which time a divorce was needed. But an actual marriage was not to be dissolved. I'm not sold on that...I need to check into it.

I'm assuming this isn't United Church of Christ? They tend to be more liberal. I feel bad for this ex-pastor. What was he supposed to do?

It's kind of like when the woman was thrown down on the ground about to be stoned by the men (her accusers) until Jesus told them any who is without sin throw the first stone. Guilty by their own conscience they all dropped their stones and left. All sins have been paid at the Cross past, present and future. Does this mean this sin can't be forgiven? No. Does this mean Jesus would have to get back on the cross to die again. Absolutely not. We either believe what he did for us is enough or we don't. No sin is too big or small. We just need to repent and we will be forgiven. It's that simple. Any doubt only comes from Satan. Jesus is enough to cover all sins unless we reject him. I'm divorced does that mean I can't be God's vessel? No. It doesn't matter what we've done in life. If we repent he is just to forgive us. It's not that complicated.
