There will also be "birth pangs" leading up to His return. Some of these things include wars, rumors of wars, earthquakes, floods, etc. and they will increase in frequency and intensity, just like labor pains.
ConnNative is correct. In fact, Israel being a nation is the LAST prophecy in scripture that must be fulfilled before Jesus' return. Technically, He could now come for His church at any moment. Each second that passes brings us one second closer.

If you want to observe the signs of the times and judge for yourself if these are the "latter days", watch the world news. I STRONGLY recommend FOX news and ESPECIALLY Christian news organizations and web sites. Main-stream news channels (ABC, CBS, NBC, MSNBC, CNN etc..) will NOT REPORT world events from a Christian point of view (IF AT ALL).

The key is the Mid-East, especially Israel and most especially Jerusalem. News from the Mid-East will tell you how close Jesus' return is.

Since Pentecost the 'Israel of God' [ Galatians 6 v 16 ] is No longer fleshly or natural Israel. That spiriutal 'house of worship' Jesus taught was abandoned by God [ Matthew 23 v 38 ]. Abandoned or destroyed in the year 70 by the Roman armies. Through God's mercy or undeserved kindness modern-day Israel exists as a national group.
The 'Jerusalem' since Pentecost is Jerusalem 'above'. Please see: Galatians 4 v 26.

Since the time of Cornelius [ Acts chapter 10 ] God took out of the gentiles, or the people of the nations, for himself. - Acts 15 v 14.

Since Pentecost a Jew would be a 'spiritual Jew'.- Please see Romans 2 vs 28,29. Not by flesh but by spirit. [ spiritual Jews ]. A 'spiritual house' a spiritual nation without borders or boundaries- 1st Peter 2 vs 9 , 5.

Isn't the LAST prophecy 1st Thess. 5 vs 2,3 ? ____ As a sort of 'final signal' that when 'they' [ the political powers that be ] will be saying, 'Peace and Safety' or 'Peace and Security' as a precursor to the great tribulation.- Rev. 7 v 14 ?

Have you ever looked around at the world without your Jesus glasses on?

What events will happen just before the Messiah returns? Will there be specific signs that will warn us? Are these signs spelled out in Revelations?
I asked this question in the Judaism forum and got very interesting answers. They said that some Jews think bad events will signal that their Messiah is about to appear, others think good events will signal the coming of their Messiah, and others think it will happen when everyday life is kind of boring.
I was surprised their answers were so varied.
Come back yes but Not a physical return because as Jesus taught at John 14 v 19 the world would behold him No more. So, 'Come back' in the sense of Matthew 25 vs 31,32 in 'glory' . It's the words from Jesus' mouth which will rid the earth of all wickedness.- Isaiah 11 vs 3,4; Revelation 19 vs 11,15.

John spelled out in Revelation [ singular: One Revelation with 16 parts or vivid word pictures ] at Revelation 6 v 8 John penned that there would be an increase of killing and hunger. Matthew wrote [ chapter 24 ] that the last days of badness on earth would be like the 'days of Noah' . The earth was violent in Noah's day.- Gen. 6 v 11.
Along with all the badness on earth there would be the international proclaiming of the 'good news of God's kingdom' - Matthew 24 v 14.
Paul also wrote about the last days of badness on earth would be described by the selfish distorted form of love listed at 2nd Timothy 3 vs 1-5,13. That would be in sharp contrast to the godly definition of love defined at 1st Cor. 13 vs 4-6.

According to 1st Thess. 5 vs 2,3 Messiah comes by 'surprise' like an un-announced thief. Comes when 'they' [ruling powers] are saying 'Peace' which is only a precursor to the coming great tribulation before the start of Jesus 1000-year reign over Earth. Great tribulation as mentioned at Revelation 7 v 14.
See also: Jeremiah 6 v 14; 8 v 11.

Reality, for the most part.

My friend, you've been hornswaggled by all that Late Planet Earth Left Behind nonsense. All these book were written by their authors solely for one purpose: making a boatload of $$$'s. There's not a lick of truth to them. You won't believe me I know, but each generation for the last 2000 years has believed they were the generation that would see the return of Jesus. Paul believed he would see Jesus return. That's why he wrote "But those who marry will face many troubles in this life, and I want to spare you this because the time is short.1 Corinthians 7:28-29

Millions of Christians were disappointed in 1988. Millions more have been disappointed in every successive timemarker, 1967-2007, now the latest 2017. When 2017 comes and goes the Christian book publishers will pick a new date and publicize the hell out of it. By then Lindsey will probably be dead so they'll have to find a new best-selling writer. They should have no difficulty. There's thousands of them lined up to pass off their particular line of hogwash to a dumbed-down Christian population in this country.

Then you see that the Bible is an international book. A book that is translated into the most languages than any other book.

You would also see the reality that the 'good news of God's kingdom' is internationally proclaimed just at Jesus recorded words said it would be done at Matthew 24 v 14; Acts 1 v 8.

You see that no matter how hard people or nations have tried to ban the Bible or God's people they have not succeeded.

You also see the current reality of global troubles as Matthew chapter 24 and Luke chapter 21 describes.

You also see as reality the prevalent characteristics listed at 2nd Timothy 3 vs 1-5,13; 4 v 3 as a final result of the times we live in as also a real line of evidence of the reality of our day or time frame. You thus see the end result of the failure of people failing to apply the Golden Rule, and failing to apply Jesus new commandment of John 13 vs 34,35.

Actually, the "reality" I see in your bible is very much akin to the "reality" of the Norse, Roman, Sumerian and Greek et al mythologies - except your god's mythology has caused much more harm.

Is it really the Bible akin, or rather akin to church customs and teachings outside of Scripture being taught as Scripture which is more akin to religious mythology ?

It's hard to be brief, but one common religious myth taught as Scripture is a forever permanent burning after death.
Whereas the biblical hell [ sheol ] is Not a burning place but a sleeping place. Even the word cemetery means 'sleeping place' as in RIP [ rest in peace ]

Resting in peace [ sleeping ] is the state of the dead according to Jesus' teachings at John 11 vs 11-14.
Jesus was well educated in the Hebrew OT Scriptures which also teach the dead as being unconscious as in sleep.
[References: Psalms 6 v 5; 13 v 3; 115 v 17; 146 v 4; Daniel 12 vs 2,13; Ecclesiastes 9 v 5 ]

Gospel writer John wrote that the day will come when everyone in the 'biblical hell' will be 'delivered up' out of hell. Meaning resurrected out of the temporary Bible's hell [ grave ], then emptied-out hell is cast vacant into a symbolic 'second death' for vacated hell.- Revelation 20 vs 13,14. That 'day' to come is a thousand-year day, or millennial-long day, when Jesus reigns over earth when our 'last enemy death' will be no more. - 1st Corinthians 15 v 26.
With 'No more death' there will be no more hell or the stone-cold common grave of mankind 'times of refreshing' and 'times of restoration' will be coming to righteous mankind.- Acts 3 vs 19,21
