There are several dozen additional (very direct) rules in the Sermon on the Mount. I guess those rules are not as exciting as saving ourselves and living forever.
Where does the RCC rank salvation in importance? Is that different from your common sense?
To pay the price for sin: "just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
To make salvation available to sinners: "On hearing this, Jesus said to them, 'It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.'"
To tell us about God: “All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.

There's that pesky truth word again.
And every Christian under the sun, most who are not in 100% agreement with what they believe truth is,all claim to have it. He that has the son has life, but how can he if he does not have and believe the 100% truth like I do?.

I know, by gawd that I have the Spirit telling me what is the truth. So, if you don't believe me, you don't have the Spirit, so you aren't saved/christian/whatever.
Is this the central piece of Christianity? I believe this is the essence of Christianity. Much more so than seeking salvation to live forever.
Why do some Christians ignore this centerpiece of Christianity.
It is the single greatest sermon given in human history. In terms of what it means to be a follower of Christ and how we should live our lives, there is no better passage of scripture in existence.
However, the central message of the Bible is that the Messiah, the Christ, the Son of God loved us so much that he came to earth, temporarily trading his status as immortal God and becoming an ordinary mortal human being. He taught us how to live our lives such that we would be happiest in this life and the next. He suffered, bled and died to pay the price for our sins. He rose from the dead, defeating death for us all. The central message is Christ.

Catholic Church:
One who dies in the state of friendship with God (the state of grace) will go to heaven.
Matthew 24:13

13 but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.
Protestants:
Just accept Jesus once, be born again and you are done.
Obviously salvation is equally important, but for Catholics it is a given and the constant pounding of the salvation topic every Sunday is not needed. The Sunday homily is mostly about how to be a good Christian.
