Here is an interesting article on the subject.

The Origin and History of the Doctrine of Endless Punishment

Hellfire and torment is a ridiculous concept, but given enough impetus at the pulpit to people that ae not very literate, and burdened with a religion that kills you if you don't believe, it could well be considered as some place of physical dimensions, unless you are logical and know that Satan was cast down to the vicinity of the earth, not to a Hell that God almighty had created.

In regards to creation, the master piece of all creation was Man and Woman in the Garden of Eden, this event was recorded by Moses and it was simply stated as "God created the heavens and the earth." No mention of ....and Hell, Hades, purgatory, or limbo, which is logical as God could not then say "And it was good".

To believe in Hell as a rewards for being bad, one had to believe in the immortal soul, it has to believe that this immortal soul can feel pain, or fire and torment would mean nothing, and it would mean ignoring the Scriptures for the sake of tradition.

The Creator made man from the dust, and then he breathed life into him..."And he became a living soul". Before that breath of life he was a inanimate soul. When Adam died he returned to the dust as his "Breath of live" had been taken from him.

"After Solomon observed that the living know that they will die, he wrote: “But the dead know nothing at all.” He then enlarged on that basic truth by saying that the dead can neither love nor hate and that “there is no work nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom in the Grave.” (Read Ecclesiastes 9:5, 6, 10.) Similarly, Psalm 146:4 says that when a man dies, “his thoughts perish.” We are mortal and do not survive the death of our body. The life we enjoy is like the flame of a candle. When the flame is put out, it does not go anywhere. It is simply gone."

The more one looks, logically, at these things the less they are feasible, but Satan is the angle of darkness, not of light, and he is ensuring there are many conflicting concepts of his original lie to keep most stubborn people going.

Does the number really matter?

The real question is where else would we go?

As Jesus told us, those in Hell will understand why they are there and hope others can be steered away from Hell. Luke 16:19-31

Oh. Let's pick a group most fundamentalists believe go to hell.....even though few will come right out and admit it. Believing Jews. Not the right religion....don't accept Jesus as their savior. They'll know they should have accepted Jesus before they went into the showers at Auschwitz?

Is that how it works in your religion?

What about the Hindu kids killed in earthquakes. No Jesus for them either. Do they understand they're in hell because they're Hindus? Who tells them? The fundamentalists?

I want him to think. I want all the evangelicals and all the fundamentalists to think about how ugly it is to believe that a 14-year-old Hindu girl is in hell because she didn't believe what they believe.

But they won't think. They've turned their brains to "off" and their hearts to ice.

(Meanypants....is that above or below "Jezebel" on the fundamentalist's list of bad things?)

What is revealed in God's Word?

Is the planet destroyed by some apocalypse?

Ecclesiastes 1:4, "Generations come and generations go, but the earth remains forever."

Psalm 37:11, "But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace."

Some don't accept the Old Testament or Hebrew Scriptures as much as the New Testament or Greek Scriptures so lets look at what Jesus said in the Gospels.

Matthew 5:5, "Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth."

And in Acts 24:15, "and I have the same hope in God as these men themselves have, that there will be a resurrection of both the righteous and the wicked."

Don't you think it would be unfair for anyone to have died in ignorance of who the true God was and not be given the opportunity to learn about him. Just think, as an example, of some 10th century Buddhist monk who was trying to follow a path that he believed would lead him to be a better person and died never having the opportunity to find out about the Christian God. Wouldn't it be just and loving to resurrect that person and give him the opportunity to learn about God?

Those people got to live somewhere when they are brought back to life so why not an earth that , "remains forever." There's been many who have died so while some go to heaven a great many don't. They'll be resurrected, on earth.

The apostle John in Revelation 7:4-9 says that some will go to heaven (144,000) and this doesn't refer to literal Jews because the tribes mentioned in that verse don't match the literal tribes of Judah written in the Book of Numbers. In contrast to those few a great multitude of people who are not numbered also can look forward to life just not in heaven. Revelation 14:1-4 explains more who these 144,000 are. Some people get really focused on whether or not 144,000 is a literal number but lets not lose sight of the bigger picture. The apostle John is CONTRASTING a "few" with the "many" Some go to heaven. Most don't but will be on earth.Remember, the Bible says the meek will " inherit" the earth and that the earth remains "forever." That's a long, long time. God's will for mankind from the beginning was to spread a paradise over the earth (read the account in Genesis). God fulfills what he has said he will do. Always.

Would it surprise you that the word "hell" does not appear in any of the earliest copies of the Bible. See this post #178 in another thread on City-Data for more info if you are interested about hell or eternal torment... Eternal Torment or Annihilation

An old man walking a lone highway, came at the evening, cold and gray to a chasm vast, deep and wide through which was flowing a swollen tide. The old man crossed in the twilight dim; the rapids held no fears for him. But he turned, when safe on the other side, and built a bridge to span the tide.

Old man, cried a fellow pilgrim near, you are wasting your time in building here. Your journey will end with the closing day. You never again will pass this way. You have crossed the chasm deep and wide; why build you this bridge at even-tide?

The builder lifted his old gray head. Good friend, in the path I have come, he said, there follows after me today a youth whose feet must pass this way. This stream, which has been as naught to me, to that fair youth may a pitfall be. He too must cross in the twilight dim — Good friend, I am building this bridge for him.

Try to understand the parable and this poem.
