If they never let anyone resign, the the number of members will continue to grow regardless of the number attending services or putting money into the collection plate.

Now, that's why they like to pretend they won't let you resign. If you don't go, and don't contribute, you have effectively quit.

Now, there are some churches that want a letter from your new chuch before taking you off the roll. In that way, a person always is considered part of a church body even if they never attend.
