According to the definition of Pharisee

1. Pharisee A member of an ancient Jewish sect that emphasized strict interpretation and observance of the Mosaic law in both its oral and written form.
2. A hypocritically self-righteous person.

Because they were hypocritical, self righteous, fundies. They were all about the letter of the law, not the spirit of the law. They forgot the most important commandments love god, and love your neighbor. They were always preaching "thou shall not" instead of leading by the example of gods love.

My reading of First Century history and the Jewish Revolt leads me to the conclusion the Pharisees were pretty decent guys and get a bum rap.

You're right. And "Love your neighbor as yourself" is a summary of the Mosaic Law. If that is all you do, you are focusing on the Law. Many people today do this to an extreme. It's the epitome of self-righteousness. They focus so much on "love" and not offending anyone. That is all that we hear today. To dare to criticize someone is to be called a hater.

True Christianity is realizing we are all sinners and are incapable of being good.

What is your problem with love ? Jesus taught us to abide in it to bear his nature and character,Paul said it is the greatest thing, he said faith expresses itself through it, John said we love him because he first loved us, he also said that everyone who loves is born of God. The foundation of the 10 commandments are love, so are the beatitudes, Jesus Christ was nailed to the cross by wicked men because he loved the world that the religious system hated. What us your problem with love?.

Love is great--and we should be doing it as a result of the Gospel. It's the result of God working in your life, not how one gets God in their life. It's legalism to require someone to do anything to please God.

What must I do to be saved ?. It is only you that is talking about pleasing God in some way to get accepted by him. Love does not think this way.

"Love" is not just being nice to people, it is having their best interests at heart. "Tough love" is a reality, it just depends on the motivation and the presentation.

Being Christ-like is having the best interests of all concerned at heart.

I once heard a short sermon. The priest said, "Do you want to be like Christ? Well, then. Can you walk on water? Make the blind see? Heal cripples? No, you can't. What else did Christ do? He lowered himself to become like an ordinary human. If you want to be like Christ, humble yourself."
