If it wasn't, and there is something wrong with a prophetic stand, there's going to be an even bigger problem with the rod of iron. Of course, Ghandi's living (and demonstrating) peacefully probably struck a most palatable balance.

They did not break any rules. The rule was that they stop the prayers via loudspeaker, which they did, and they replaced it by moment of silence. The people decided to use the moment of silence to pray. To ban individuals from personal prayer would be unconstitutional.
Another Christian push back on rules. Good for them.
So if a cheerleader began reciting a Salat (Muslim prayer) before the game and some others joined in, you would have no problem with that? Just another Muslim pushing back on the rules... that's fair isn't it?
It's funny how people are quick to laud a bunch of cheerleaders saying the Lord's Prayer in a public way, yet forget the verses that come immediately before it:
“And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him."
I mean, why do my fellow Christians insist on public prayers at every event, yet ignore Christ's own commandment on the matter? Reading this, there's not much wiggle room. He doesn't waffle on where and when you pray publicly. He says to not do it, expressly stating that your prayers should be said in private. How hard is it for you guys to understand that?
They shouldn't have a ban on school prayer anyway. That's unconstitutional.
They should have a ban on forced school prayer. If the atheists want to not pray, they should not be required to. Just as someone not going to a banquet is not forced to, but you don't outright cancel the feast.

Jesus and the apostles prayed in public, so maybe there is something missing from your understanding of the above verse about Him saying "don't be like the hypocrites".
