I grew up environment that was marbled in christian fundamentalism, and began questioning the ideology as a young adult.
The entire construct only made sense in a self-referential way.
There's an all power-full deity that's gonna save everybody by torturing this guy... brings to mind Dick Cheney.
This premise, and viewing life as a struggle between all-powerful forces of good and evil, became bleak and onerous.
The church/temple/synagogue/ashram can provide a caring community, but I was able to find the same sense of uniqueness, support, and fellowship with unchurched people in secular environments.
The only time I become troubled by religion is when it's proselytized to my kids, or becomes a basis for public policy.
