There was never any doubt in the minds of those who know Catholic doctrine. Sensational headlines not withstanding, nothing he really said was ever outside Catholic teachings.

My father-in-law is a devout, knee-walking Catholic who still hasn't gotten over his daughter becoming Episcopalian twenty years ago. The man is slightly to the right of Atilla the Hun. According to him, the Pope isn't Catholic.

Priests in England are called Vicars. The Pope is just the main MAN on Earth. If you shake the hand of the Pope you have touched God-------or so they used to say on the old days.

Seriously; the Pope is the leader of Christendom and when he speaks people take notice. They want to know what is the latest message from Jesus.
