But I wonder, is it the spirit of fervently desiring God's will and direction that is the thing that's really missing? This fervent desire is what would cause us to at times fast and pray and diligently seek God's face. I need to check my devotion to God.

Good points, my friend.
I've had people tell me "Well, I realized I hadn't eaten all day and it was almost 4, so I just decided to make it a fast" I don't think that's quite right.
I think a fast needs to be premeditated. Dedicated to the Lord, if you will. Not for weight loss or purification of the body. But an act of submission and commitment to God.
After talking about this, I realize I haven't done this God given directive in quite some time.
I think one is in order in the near future.

We Catholics have lent, and meatless fridays
Although the fridays aren't bad if you like fish, and one lent I gave up suger in my coffee
Other than this stupid diet my wife has us on , I could also use a real fast.
thanks for the reminder

Fasting has become one of my favorite disciplines. I do Daniel's fast (fruits & vegetables and beans). But when I fast, I also give up going online and don't watch any TV. I also give up caffeine.
I did this fast for 40 days during Lent last year and I have to say, it was the best 40 days of my spiritual life. To cut out everything and make so much time for prayer, meditation, and Bible reading is just awesome! It really makes for a great Easter feast, too. LOL, I just about ate everything in sight that day.
Now Marks, before you get on me-I'm just posting this as encouragement for others.
I've done partial fasts since then, but I so look forward to Lent this year!
If you're up to it Alpha, you could join me!

Absolutely.
And I think your post shows exactly why we still need to fast.
Great job!
Why will Marks be upset?

Go back a few posts on this thread.
Also, before my fast last year, I started a thread asking for advice because it was my first fast. He wasn't too happy about it.
Love ya anyway, Marks!

I don't see how a thread and discussion about tweaking a biblical discipline is any problem.
But then Marks and I haven't agreed on every topic so....
Anyway, I wonder if he only prays in private?
I appreciate all your input Ms. Charlotte, I think your contributions are awesome.
And I love you and Marks too...heck even the disciples didn't agree on everything, ya know?

I think fasting in particular is conveniently avoided. I actually had a Sunday School teacher tell me one time that since Jesus died on the cross, fasting isn't necessary.
It made me think of the chapter in the gospels where Jesus was running down the "Now when you pray....Now when you give....Now when you fast" and I asked the guy "Since Jesus died, does that mean we don't give or pray?" to which he replied "No" and I said "Hmmm....cuz fasting's right there with those too."
I think it's sad how the church is failing to equip believers. We should pray for our churches and their leadership (or lack thereof).

Alpha that is a funny story. I totally agree with u. There does need to be more teaching on the subject of fasting and Believers need to fast, pray and seek the face of GOD. I am deep into the fast now there is no turning back I am committed to seeing it through. I hope more Christians consider fasting as the Spirit leads them. I think it is important eventhough I have not heard that much teaching in the church about it. Jentzen Franklin really has some good teaching materials on the subject. Now that I am learning more about fasting, I am inspired to practice it
