I lived in the South for awhile some years back. I found the lack of respect many people had for the religious beliefs of others to be stifling. I also found that racism is alive and well down there, but kept more on the down and low. Not the ridiculous KKK-ish behavior of the distant past. More just a general acceptance that black people are inferior or hopelessly flawed. To put it all together, I found the hypocrisy of Bible Belt Christians to be absolutely stunning. Nowhere else can you "give Jesus all the praise", preach love to all mankind, have religions billboards everywhere and still have such widespread bigotry.
That being said, I was very impressed by Southerner's determination to serve and be kind to one another. I was living in Oklahoma when the bombing happened and the genuine Christian nature of the people absolutely came shining through. For that, I was very impressed.
