Pope Francis shook up the Catholic world -- again -- on Tuesday by announcing that priests around the world will be authorized to forgive the "sin of abortion" when the church begins a "Year of Mercy" this December.

"The forgiveness of God cannot be denied to one who has repented," the Pope said, adding that he has met "many women" scarred by the "agonizing and painful" decision to have an abortion.

this has been cussed and discussed on a recent thread ("pope not needed to exonerate women who had abortions" or something like that). that said and to sum up what was said there, the Church has always offered forgiveness (through the power of Christ) to those who REPENT of having had (or performed) an abortion or any other sin for that matter. in most countries this was normally done by the local bishop (the "facilities" for forgiving sins of this nature this have apparently already been possessed by "regular' parish priests in the U.S. and Canada for some time previously---thanks Janelle for that update!!!). the present announcement merely EXTENDS this to other priests in other countries that did not previously have it. this is NOT a change of doctrine but instead a change of procedure to make reconciliation, forgiveness, and healing easier for those who wish to do so. IMHO, the whole hullabaloo about a "change" is more a demonstration of the cluelessness of the media about Christianity in general and apparently in this case Catholicism in particular.

Dear John,
Actually the Pope and or priest have not even the power to forgive their own sins, much less the sins of others. He isn't even able to cast out demons, even though he has put in the effort. The man is a "the peg driven into a firm place" which will "break off", and those hanging on him will be "cut off". (Isaiah 22;25) Petros, meaning stone or small rock, such as in sand, is the name given to Simon Bar Jonas, who was the "worthless shepherd" of Zechariah 11, who would not feed, tend, or care for the sheep, even though that was requested of him. The Pope's church is built on sand (Mt 7:26-27), and will "fall" "in that day" (Is 22:25). This will extend to all who put their hopes into Peter, the Pope, or the church built on his so called " beloved brother" (2 Peter 3:15) Paul, the false prophet.

Still some priest can excommunicate people who have divorced have children outside of marriage and then condemn the children of parents who have not be married , they could remove people who have abortions and people of strange relationships or have issues where the Eucharist would be with held ........ So then people who have repented could now have excommunication lifted , and be able to have a relations ship with Jesus with the church on their side instead of being condemned at the grave yard which could of happened

Even better...come directly to Jesus and he will forgive! You don't need to go through a man to get forgiveness.
