God chose Jerusalem as his dwelling place, and the Holy Of Holies in the temple was literally his place of residence. And yet in 70 AD when the Romans invaded Jerusalem, stripped the temple of it's treasures, desecrated the Holy of Holies, and torn the temple completely down... God chose then to be out of town.
