It may be figurative, but I think you can understand that the expression in and of itself is a cannibalistic description.
The reaction 2000 years ago was same as what we see now. Like today, back then there were also many who did not understand what He meant, and turned away.

"From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him"

I understand what you're saying Finn, and you're exactly right. However, I think you missed my point. Are you saying the statement, even if it was just figurative, doesn't sound cannibalistic?

It's not surprising that the reaction of people 2000 years ago as well as today would not find a rather morbid, cannibalistic description about eating flesh and drinking blood to be something all that appealing and would understandably turn away. It could have been stated more direct and understanding rather than hiding an actual meaning within a mysterious riddle, especially if the objective was/is to attract followers.
