So either the universe magically popped into existence fully formed in the Big Bang or God magically popped into existence fully formed at the beginning of time?

Those are the only 2 possibilities anyone can think of?

The universe was started by God as He had to get the hydrogen and other elements started to even form Rocks and compounded gasses so planets and stars would develop , as these elements do no change with out some help ...... I do not think that God created the heaven full all at once , but took billions of years to develop , as the creation story should not be interpreted literal

Or God is eternal.

bingo (at least from the traditional Christian viewpoint). the UN-created creator who exists from eternity OUTSIDE of space/time/and the universe of matter and energy (and cause and effect therein) as we are able to know it. wild and crazy isn't it but IMHO not essentially any more so than a "big bang" of apparently (also) un-created matter and energy that somehow all came together in one "singularity" and then became "everything" that somehow "just" happened!!! "mystery" of science OR "mystery" of religion----each boggles the mind in this case. apparently reason and "science" can only take us so far and some point the question of ultimate "beginnings" reduces us to FAITH on one or the other---either that human reason and science will eventually describe, predict, and understand "how" and perhaps "why" everything "is" OR that someone or something exists and operates beyond what we can ever know or understand by human means and has revealed another "truth" that hopefully gives reason for and meaning to this whole wonderful and terrible universe we are in. some say "yes" to one and "no" to the other (and vice-versa) and others will simply say "I don't know and will never know"---so many questions and so few answers!!!

God is outside of time so He always was and always will be. Humans cannot understand this now but will someday in the afterlife.

How about considering the possibility that the universe came into existence as a result of a completely natural ongoing process and no intelligence was involved whatsoever?

AFAIK, though nobody has YET been able to explain what was involved in creating "everything" from "nothing"---"big bang" or otherwise except that they theorize those "natural ongoing process" you mention and what ever "laws" might govern and guide that process were somehow "always" there. some have theorized that our present universe is one of a series of recurring radical expansions and slow collapses of matter and energy, others a multiplicity of " parallel universes" bubbling up from somewhere somehow with no definitive explanation of "how:" (let alone "why") just basically "because" of some unknown 'natural" law. such "scientific" theories that posit a basically "pre-existent" matter/energy and/or "laws" for same are not especially different FWIW and IMHO from the theists and their pre-existent "creator" who MIGHT not completely un-reasonably be regarded as the "law-giver" for all those "natural" laws when you come right down to it!!!

since science has so far been unable to discern what ever MIGHT have been "before" what now "is" most any theory or belief (be it "theistic"/religious or "materialistic"/rational-scientific) could reasonably be said to have elements of uncertainty or "question begging" as to ultimate "causes" and thus EQUALLY open to both faith and skepticism.

Just because humans are linear, not everything must have a starting point and an ending point. The big bang is just the creation of this universe, not the creation of everything. there has always been matter and always will be. existance has no starting point and ending point. Religious types believe only the superbeing can be eternal, physicists believe all matter and energy always exist. Both assume that something is eternal. i agree.

what? this is based on what we don't know so make up anything you want. The only answers are from something or nothing. neither is magical or supernatural. they are not from somewhere else or separate from us. but understanding that would imply knowing more than most.
