Volunteer to be a substitute SS teacher. That is a good way for them to see if you can handle it, and for you to prove you can.

I agree with volunteering to be a substitute. Rather than asking your pastor why you weren't selected, tell him you're interested in teaching Sunday school and would like his guidance on how you could prepare for that.

OK, it is possible God is calling you to do this. But has He said you must do it at that particular church?

I wanted to speak with my pastor today but he seemed busy.
Well definitely talk to him.

It is possible that the other applicants are viewed as being more reliably versed in the specific dogma espoused by that particular church and are considered to be more reliable in toeing the doctrinal line and instilling the expected indoctrination.

Don't ask why you are not chosen. Ask what you can do so that you are better qualified the next time the position opens. The first puts him on the defensive, the second asks him to help you succeed which will appeal to his good nature.

Ask. Tell him you are considering a career in teaching and ask him what you could do to develop your skills so that he would consider you for Sunday School teaching. If he is on the level he'll have some constructive advice for you.
